Will my children get Diabetes?

My mother was a T1, she had 4 children. I am the only one with diabetes and I am a T2, diagnosed when I was 38. I think my diet (always ate a lot of junk food) and weight (have been 40-50 lbs overweight for years) were the major contributing factors.

Hi Nicolas,
I worry about the same thing, as parents how could we not!
But, I have decided that if it is to happen, at this point there is nothing I can do. I have it, I am ok and if they got it, they would be too. We can only be great healthy role model for our kids, and stay diligent to make sure they are as healthy as possible.
I have got the paperwork for a trial in Australia, where first they are tested for the “predisposed gene”. The thing is, you can have the gene and not get T1, and you can not have the gene and still get it!
So, I guess us worrying is not worth it. We should be working at being healthy to be around for our kids and positive.
If (god forbid) they were to be diagnosed they would feel they were not alone at least, and that we would be a great example of how to live a long and healthy life with D. xx

Hi Kristy, thanks for the reaction on my discussion group.
You are absolutely right, but I think having to live with D is more difficult for a child than for an adult… they usually have other activities, more difficult to accept, more difficult to live more disciplined, etc… I don’t know, it’s just a feeling…
And I don’t get it… what’s the use to test our children, if the result doesn’t give you added value, and even if it does, there is nothing we can do. So, like you said, show them how to live healthy (food, sport, …) it’s the best we can do and pray God they will not be striked with D…
But still, the tought my children have an increased chance to get D, makes me worry sometimes…
Thanks for the support and have a nice week… xx
