Wow just found something that REALLY spikes me

Im not a HUGE potatoe chip person, and really I dont know since I've gotten into lower carbing when the last time I've had chips really was, or if I even bothered or cared to see how it would raise my BG.

But tonight anyway I had made a little turkey sandwhich and BG was a bit on the low side around 63/64 and Im like chips would be REALLY good. Um chips don't do so well with me, lol....2 hours later now 176. YIKES guess there is a reason I dont really care for them that much. They were good but NOT worth the spike.

Yikes. I don't even consider 176 to be a spike ... certainly not a REALLY big spike. Wish I did. :(

Awe, somedays Im lucking if I hit low 100's after eating. Grrrr stupid D...but if I cut my basals back or cut my carb ratio back, then I run to high. Its a lot better now on my pump at least...going low isnt a EVERYDAY thing now.

If I aim for low 100s at two hours I would end up low before the next meal. Even if I eat just 15-20g of carbohydrates and pre-bolus, I find it hard to keep the spike under 9-10 mmol/l (160-180 mg/dl) at one hour, though if I can manage that then two hours is okay.

Lately I've been running high so if I can stay under 9-10 mmol/L at two hours after eating anything, I'm happy.

LOL- Yeah, they are like eating Potatoes and French Fries!
When I eat Chips?
-Figure out How many carbs per
-I actually Count them out ( or If home, weight them out )
-Take the appropiate Bolus for them

Works Fine for me!

and yes, I have to be at 120 after 2 hrs , otherwsie I will go too low at Hr #3..
Thus I test at 2 and 3 hrs, take a Glucose Tab if Below that magic 120 # in 2 hrs..
I'd rather be alittle on the higher side of 90 by hr #3, than lower or worse..

I imagine that was some of the problem...I probably should have weighed them out versus counting them out, Being that some of the chips are bigger or smaller, lol. Oh well. Not the end of the world, lol I was just a little suprised I can usually eat cereal and things like that and bolus for it and it not cause much of a spike at all. Guess I just dont do chips that well, lol.

On average potato chips are 60% fat and takes longer to absorb. The body will go after the carbs first and then chase the fat. Probably why you spiked 2-3 hrs later. Go easy on the chips or try the baked chips instead. Just a thought, no advice. Stay well.

That is true, lol I usually while I try eating lower carb for some reason dont often have problems with really high spikes, but that makes sense the high fat content. Definately think if I want chips maybe try something like pringles that is all the same size and definately the baked ones.

Doritos were my downfall last night...similar story, I was 69 before bed and was like "hmm, Nacho cheese Doritos would make a wise food choice right now." Not so much. :)

For what it's worth...I do better with Sweet Potato Chips. And they taste awesome-r than plain old chips!

Darn Doritos...the Cool Ranch Doritos are my downfall. :-)

Are there any sweet potato chips that are not super high in carbs?

I can't eat potato chips because I'm allergic to potatoes, and sweet potato chips are SO good but the ones I've found are all really high in carbs compared to regular nacho chips.

I also can't eat Doritos because they send me into the 300s without fail. I haven't eaten them in a few years because of that, and because they are so addictive that I can't just have a few!

I dont know if I've tried sweet potatoe chips, Im more of a salt addict than sweet. Haha shoot me now if hypertension is ever in my future.

I just recently got some of those chip sized rice cakes, the ranch flavored ones. Kinda scared to try them. Im funny with rice sometimes I do ok with it, other times not as much. I hate ruining a good day of numbers just for a handful of chips. I think yesterday before the blasted potatoe chips I was averging around 86...hahaha that jump up to 176 killed my average. Haha maybe that +/- 20 was working in my favor for once.

Hey Kate , you don't look 69! HA!

I'm a total potato chip junkie. I pretty much don't buy them or I eat them.

LOL yeah esp when sour cream is involved.

Or when beer is involved, and watch out for dill dip.

Awe Im not a beer drinking, something in beer makes me HORRIBLY ill when I drink it. Give me a shot of vodka and some cranberry juice though. Yikes that does NOT sound good with potatoe chips at ALL.

I also have problems resisting potato chips. My solution is buy, ocassionally, a single serving bag of Terra chips. It's a treat & a bag is ~16 carbs.

The same thing happens to me. I was around the 100 mark all day, doing just fine. I friend called and suggested a great little Mexican place, where they serve corn chips and salsa. I had a taco salad, a few chips and salsa and now I am at 196. I did a two hour rescue bolus of 2.5 units (recommended by the pump meter) and we'll see what happens in the next two hours.

I can so relate, Christy! :)

Aside, my bdff is hopeless addicted to chips. Are there any suggestions to help get her off of them?
