I have a question today for all those Yoga-lovers out there.. Well, I am one of them, and I try to have a Yoga routine as many mornings as possible (round 40 mins).
I do this before I have any food, since doing Yoga shouldnt be done on a full tummy.
I do realize its not cardio training or anything, but it still can be quite intense an exercise..
Here s the weird thing: When I measure afterwards, I often have HIGHER BG than before. Sometimes it goes up by 20-30 points, What is up with that?? Any other physical training (running, walking, swimming) has the exact opposite effect.
Could it be that the liver-dump thing is happening because Im exercising on an empty stomach? But would that make sense even if my BG is around 100-110 when I start the yoga? I thought the liver starts dumping glucose when it detects the blood
sugar is dropping low, or is that a wrong presumption?
ps: Im currently honeymooning and not on any basal yet.
Karen's diagnosis sounds likely. I don't have much luck stopping DP by eating, I correct and workout most of the time but mostly do pushups/ pullups/ squats/ crunches in the aM. The boost may also be "aggravated" by adrenaline if there's an intensity or anaerobic nature to the routine.
I signed up for a yoga class that start soons so I may have better thoughts on it in a couple of weeks.
hiya julez, before i had to start bolusing to eat brekkie-was only doing basal on and off-i would exercise at wakeup-astanga yoga or kettle bells or zumba. my bg always went down and then started going up. my doctor thought it might be because i didnt have enough insulin in my body. maybe somebody else could explain it better if this is a real possibility. anyway, ive had to change my exercise routine round because now if i wake up and dont eat my bg goes up with no food (?? no fair!!) but if i wanna eat i have to bolus and have too much iob.
Hi julez, i am a yoga teacher and a mom of a type 1 diabetic. I am thinking at this point while you are honeymooning it is hard to see clear trends. I would guess though that if you are doing a fairly vigorous practice, lots of vinyasa flow there is an anaerobic component, ( muscle building vrs cardio) that actually raises bs, as long as it is only 10-20 points i'd say you are doing great! i can do nothing on an empty stomach and tend to practice in the evening. i have heard others here mention that yoga can really drop their bs, sometimes its is all about when the last insulin dose was given, is it peaking during your practice do you have any fat or protein in there to keep you going.....so many variables. yoga will serve you so well when dealing with all that diabetes will send at your you, please keep it in your "tool box" for coping! best wishes, amy
I would doubt yoga would cause a spike, most likely DP as suggested by others.
Before I was on the pump my sugar would always spike early morning, I just added extra basal for the dawn hours to knock it on the head.
If I do exercise, like sprints or lifting heavy weight to failure I will always get a spike but this is due to the glycogen in my muscles being used up I think and my liver dumping to fill them back up. I the always have a long protracted low 4-5 hours if I get to this stage.
I think that you can get that from yoga too, it can be pretty anaerobic. I will try to report after I've tried. Perhaps it will be useful that I'm doing it @ lunch and will have resolved the DP by "showtime"?
but doesnt it depend on when you wake up? if you wake up at like 8, youll already have the dp showing up, as it would have started earlier? or can it just show up at anytime in te morning? dont tell me it can just show up whenever it wants no, anytime in the am?!?! ffs.
Hi Julez: I have practiced yoga for a long time, but I am sorry to say I am not much help for you as most yoga sessions (except restorative) drop my blood sugar. A lot. For you, I do think that DP might be the culprit!
Mine moves around, generally hitting somewhere between 4 and 7:00 AM. I'll correct and then it will go up again if I do a bunch of pushups or whatever. Maybe we should rename it "Totally Annoying Phenomenon"
my DP does not happen until I wake up, hence I cannot mess with my basal and I overbolus for breakfast, not the best thing to do. I finally figured out after years of fasting bloodwork why my bloodsugars were always high. Now I bolus for a fasting bloodwork.
