Somehow I stumbled upon this forum, and already it’s been eye opening for me! So, I thought I’d ask you all - what are your holy grail resources, for somebody who is new to her diagnosis? What books, podcasts, blogs, websites, etc would you recommend? I felt really isolated, but I am just becoming aware that this forum is the tip of the iceberg - and I want more!
Welcome! TuD is a great place to learn and ask questions–it’s helped me a lot! I recommend the CalorieKing app which I use on my mobile phone. You can look up carb values of specific foods (I use a kitchen scale at home) and also items at restaurants (which is very handy for travel). The free version of the app has some advertising but it’s not very obtrusive.
Check out books written by Gary Scheiner. Also books by John Walsh. They’ve both written several. I also like The Diabetes Solution by Bernstein. It’s a bit dry but comprehensive. A low carb way if eating radically changed my ability to control my blood glucose.
Diabetes, probably more than any other disease, responds nicely to more knowledge.
@MarieB Thank you so much for sharing this. I watched it with my husband tonight, and cried. It just - gave me a little hope. Hope that there are professionals out there who are looking at me with empathy, not just judging me. Truly, an excellent talk. Thanks, again.
The lose-it app on my iPhone has become something I don’t know how I ever lived without… I use it to look up carb counts for varying amounts of just about everything you can imagine…
Hi yourhanner. When you finish with your serious research, you might like to read some blogs. Here is a list of TuD bloggers, which are also on the header at the top of all the TuD pages: Blogs - TuDiabetesTuDiabetes I have found blogs in general to be more anecdotal than informational, but I happen to enjoy reading (and sometimes writing) them.
If you are on Twitter, a lot of our members participate in #dsma, which stands for Diabetes Social Media Advocacy, it’s Wednesday nights from 9-10 ET. I know our interim director @Melissa_Lee is there frequently - you’d be warmly welcomed!
I agree 100% @yourhanner. I had the same reaction the first time I saw it and I share it as a reference for anyone who is stuck on that old saw about how T2 happens…Blessings…
Like @Terry4, I read my way to getting better #s and Bernstein helped, as did the other authors he mentioned. I also found David Mendosa’s columns early on, as well as Gretchen Becker.
I also love Stories and so I read a lot of memoirs. I can’t find my list at the moment and I donated them to a book sale for a cause I care about. But there are many of them, and many are very inspiring…
