Well today is the day. I am going armed with a print out from the Office of Civil Rights outlining Hidden Diseases (which includes Diabetes). However they say it has to interferer with her normal life. However Yesterday and today she has been dealing with High’s at school.
Yesterday she went to PE and BG was 209 (high but ok to exercise). Um Guess not. She checked her BG in the next class like always - 300! She excused herself and went to the nurse for Keytone check - Neg. COvered with INsulin. Well she had a test in the next class - Math. I asked her to tell her teacher that it was high, her teacher just said ok. So she took the test. I asked her how she felt, she said it was hard to concentrate, but she thinks she might have done ok. SO I asked her to type it all up on a paper so that I could take that with me to the meeting. This way I can show them it does affect her. You might not be able to see it, but she is struggling. I am so frustrated, because they seem to think that she doesn’t need the 504. On the letter they sent me it said "SST (student study team) / Possible 504.
Anyway I am hoping that I don’t have to take it to the next level.
Please lord help me.
I can relate to your daughter, before I was diagnosed in Jr. high I had a realllly hard time concentrating and just comprehending, they checked me for a learning disorder but I tested negative. A year later I was diagnosed and found out that my problems in school could have been the result of high or low blood sugar and being unaware that I had diabetes. To this day I still find it hard to concentrate on lectures in university, especially when my sugars are a little abnormal, so that’s a good thing you are doing, because teachers really don’t understand and you have to make them understand that diabetes can really alter ones perception and mental capabilities
Thanks Jill, I just hope that they listen to me. I believe it does affect her. Sometimes she doesn’t even make sense. Like she will stutter and can’t make a complete sentence.
how did it go?
And how can this disease NOT affect a person’s everyday life? It doesn’t make sense to assume anything less. Just the disruption of having to take time out and test and “shoot up” and worry about what you eat and worry about IF you should eat or exercise. Oh come off it, powers that be, get real!!!

I believe things went well. We did not go for the 504, but should our situation change at any point and we need it they are more than willing to do this. WE did make a form up with everything that we wanted, signs of lows (which I noticed are none until she is very low 54 or lower) and her signs for highs. So we are going to go for a pump at our next Dr. appt, along w/talking to her about DD’s hypo unawareness. We are still new and we are all opening the communication lines. The teachers were wonderful, they said that they were aware and very helpful and very impressed with how well she is handling the situation. Her grades are very good, except 1, but the class is very hard and a lot of kids don’t do well in that class. SO we are all hopefull that this will continue. I have not given up on the 504, I just feel that they are willing to do what they need to do with out that, right now. I think this is all so overwhelming for me and the counselor said that she understood that we just want our daughter to be taken care of and she would feel the same way. SO we will give a little time. We will see how things go, if they start to even remotely go south we are going back in.
Oh I forgot to let you all how thankful I am for you all. You have been such awesome friends and I am so glad that I have you all.
