About US

You will probably agree with me that there is not much support out there for young adults who are diabetic. So I created this group just for us. Share a few things about you and any thing you want.
I am Kristen. Some of my friends call me Kris. Either is ok.
I am a T1 and a Cozmo 1800 user. I am in college studying to be a nurse educator.

Hi, I fit right into this category. I’m 20, and I have T2. I’m taking Metformin at the moment and my control’s pretty decent. I’m a communications major and I’m planning to specialize in public relations. I think this group is a good idea, Kris! Hopefully more people will come and join in the party.

They better come and join, they dont know what they are missing. LOL.

Hi I am 19. My name is Emily but my nickname is snowball. I am T1 on a Minimed 722. I am in college with a major of nursing and a minor as an EMT-P both are associates degrees.

hey, i’m Maegan 22 yr old and a hospitality mngmt major. I graduate in exactly 2 months! I inject novolog and lantus although I haven’t had the best control it has def been getting better!

Thats awesome Snowball. What a unique nick name. What field to you want to go into for nursing? Are you going to do emergency medicine?

Glad things are getting better. Have you ever considered a pump. I just made the switch recently and it works so much better for me. Something you may want to consider in the future. They are fun too. Well good luck with graduation. I feel like I will never be done with school. Somedays I think it would have been faster to go to med school.

I haven’t considered a pump, they scare me.

Its alright, we will accept you any ways. Who do you see that they gave you NPH? Do you have a lot of lows? I was on NPH and R when I was diagnosed a really long time ago. I was constantly low like 6 hours after taking the NPH. TO the extent my mom had to give me glucagon once. Then I went to Lantus and Humalog when Lantus came out (was 15 then). Worked so much better. Now I am on the pump and that is doing beautiful. I see on your page you said you tried it and it didn’t work well for you. I am sorry about that. I know a few people who didn’t like it, so your not alone there. Have you ever considered trying Lantus or Levemir and then having ISF and IC ratios to use with your novologinstead of a set dose and a sliding scale.

I didn’t want one for the longest time. Thought that it meant you were bad or something. You don’t have to get one if you don’t want. I really wish I made my change sooner, but some one told me that the best thing you can do it to make sure you are really ready. So that made me feel a bit better.

Hi everyone, I am 24 years old, married and have a 2 year old son! I have been T1 for about 12 years and I have had the minimed pump for about 5 years. I love the pump and it was wonderful when I was pregnant. I have to say that my son was healthy when he was born and I joke that my pregnancy would have been the best ever if I did not have diabetes. It was quiet the challenge but well worth the effort. I am also takeing classes for my nursing degree and I want to be a dietician. If any one has any questions I have been learning a lot!

just a question… where did you put the pump during your pregnancy, I’ve only seen them in the stomach? I dont have a pump thats why I’m curious… how hard was it to keep control?

It is best to use your abdomen for the catheter placement, but I have also used my legs, and that is what I used most of my pregnancy. It is a huge challenge to regulate during pregnancy, I had to fax copies of my BS to my doctor every three days to stay on top of the changes. Your hormones fluxuate so much and they effect your absorption, insulin resistance, and BS. The most important point to remember about being pregnant is that you deffinantly want an A1C around or lower than 7 going in to the pregnancy and take folic acid before you are pregnant because these are huge factors for the fetus, and the formation of nueral tube deffects. It sounds scary but my doctors said that I did a great job and they had no concerns about me being pregnant again.

OMG i would be so scared… I dont know if I could do it… Luckily I don’t have 2 worry too much, I got alot of time to figure it all out? Have you ever gone low with you children?

It is a huge concern that I be as careful as can be when it is just me and my son. I have a huge support group with family and friends, we joke that I have alot of Moms! That is why I love the pump so much, because I have more controll rather than with the injections. The next step I am trying to take is to get the CGM so that I will be more aware of my BS trends. I do want to be pregnant again and have another child so I want to be prepared as possible this time! For me the enjoyment of my son was well worth the effort I had to put out during the pregnancy!

Hi Kris. It’s nice to know I still fit in a group that has the word young in it! I am 27 and just found out on Nov 2nd that I have T2. I just got my first meter and meds today. I am taking metformin. I only found out about this because I was getting labs to try to find out why I cant seem to get pregnant. Well I found out I have diabetes instead. Let me tell you that was a surprise. I have know quite a few people with T2 but I have never known anyone my age, they have all been alot older.

Kathryn, I have a friend that has not been dignosed with type 2 but is very close if she does not change her eating habbits, her fasting BG is about 118 - 120. It supprised me to hear this because she is a bean pole, but according to her, she lives off pizza and soda. She too is young, under 30. And a huge concern is that T2 is becoming a lot more common among children. I don’t know if this will help you cope, knowing that you are not alone just because you of your age. I am sure that if you search out support groups you will find many people your age with this condition, fortunately and unfortunatley. I hope the best for you while you learn to controll your diabetes.

hey kathryn, my endo is more or less sure i have T2 as well and put me on metformin too, even though i was diagnosed because i went into DKA and i had a blood sugar of 41mmol (or 720mg/dL). have you thought of getting tested for antibodies? i’m looking into it and plan to bring it up to my endo in a few months time, just to rule out Type 1.5 LADA.

Hi Kris,
Thanks for starting this group, I definitely agree that there should be a lot more support out there for us young adults.
I just make the cutoff at 25, type 1 for a little over 14 years and a Minimed 522 and CGMS user (LOVE it!). I just went back to college to start my 2nd bachelors degree in Biology - I would like to do something related to T1 diabetes, either research or patient care, still deciding whether I want to try for med school or not.

Newly diagnosed and new to the community. I just made it under the cut. My name is Veronica, but my friends call me Veron or V, I answer to all. I’m 28 years old and live in San Diego, CA. Hmm, what else can I mention? Well, I love my Chargers (though I HATE the coach) and I love everything Disney (especially The Little Mermaid)

I just found out on Nov 9th that I have T2. I was in line to watch a taping of Dancing with the Stars when all of a sudden I get this excruciating pain in my back. A trip to the ER - with 4 hours in the waiting room - came to find out that I had kidney stones. My sugars were high that night, so I had tests done when I got home just to be sure. A few days later, the doc called me and told me the diagnosis. I will be attending my first Diabetes/weight management class this week.
