Almond Milk

Just wondering if you have tried Almond Milk? I just bought some, it is Blue Diamond Unsweetened Almond Milk in Vanilla and it is actually pretty good. Subtle vanilla/almond taste, good consistancy, no lactose, no soy. 2 grams of carbs per 1 cup serving.

I drink that all the time, it makes great smoothies!

I drink this too. Yep, yummy. I also get the unsweetened Hemp Vanilla milk.

I bought some a month ago and found it much too sweet for me. I do not like overly sweet things like ice cream, fudge or even flavored yogurt. Guess I’m weird.

No, I haven’t tried it. Is it supposed to be Better for People?? I’ve just been researching milk and it doesn’t sound very good for People health-wise. What with the hormones, gluten, casein(both in a lot of foods and which some People are allergic to), antibiotics, etc.

I did try soy milk years ago since my Son said that cows milk wasn’t good for us(wise Kid) but I forget why I quit drinking it. I’m not sure if soy milk is good now either though.

Anyways, after reading what I did about cow’s milk, I’m looking forward to Almond milk, if I can find it. Hopefully not just at Wally’s. Hubby won’t go there. Or perhaps back to soy milk. I read that someone had said something bad about that also but they might have been referring to the sugar content…not sure. Hopefully, I can get my Hubby and Daughter into almond milk. I doubt it. :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks for mentioning it Devon.

Is Almond milk high in sugars and such?? I think I looked at the label and thought it had alot of fillers. I have resorted to buying organic milk - mostly for my children since I don’t drink much milk. It is expensive but I really don’t think all of the extra hormones are good for women/girls especially ! I had also read that soy milk isn’t good if you have any cancer receptors that are estrogen driven… My friend though asked her Dr. about this and he said 1 -2 glasses a day wouldn’t be a problem. Please share what you know about the nutritional value of Almond milk. THanks. Nancy

Nancy- here’s the label for my almond milk. This is the Unsweetened, Vanilla version.

This is Soy Free, Lactose Free, the brand is Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Almond Milk. Hope that helps!

Almond milk is better for you than cow’s milk that is for sure. You have to get the unsweetned kind to have it be low carb. Otherwise they put sugar in it. It is nice and creamy and white just like regular cows milk but has a bit of almond taste to it. Almonds are high in calicum too.

Soy is fine unless you have hypothyroid and can’t have soy products. There is no proof so far that soy has anything to do with cancer. Unsweetned soy milk are lower in carbs but not as much as the unsweetned almond milks. I have a soy cappucino one I like called Soy Slender. Tastes like Starbucks and has 1 net carb!

If anything all those hormones, antibiotics and other gross stuff in milk that you can not see( I shan’t gross you out), is going to cause you more problems. Esp. if your children have allergies, you would be surprised how many nasal allergic (post nasal drip) are caused by too much dairy.

Terrie, milk itself doesn’t technically have gluten in it but yes, most commerical dairy products come from cows that are feed corn gluten feed (and god knows what else) - all of this gets in any product you get that comes from a cow. So if you are gluten intolerant, it will cause problems for you. Almond Milk comes in the those boxes in the grocery stores. Now, it seems like almost every grocery store has them. Look in the natural foods isle or where the boxed soy milk is.

Other alternatives are coconut milk (which they have recently started putting in boxes or in the refrigerated section - not the stuff in cans) or hemp milk - I prefer the hemp milk to the almond milk but htey are both creamy to me - but than I haven’t had cows milk for 4 years. So I am used to it. It may seem watery to you at first be it will seem creamy after a while. The Unsweetened coconut milk and hemp milk you will probably have to go to a Whole Foods like place for - these are low carb as long as you get the unsweetened variety… But almond milk in boxes has gone maintream - although I have noticed that not all stores will have the unsweeetned one - so make sure you read the box carefully (or just check the carbs- if it is unsweetned it will be like 1 or 2 carbs per serving). I prefer the unsweetned vanilla flavor one which doesn’t change the carbs.

You can also buy creamer type items made with soy or coconut milk now for your coffee - although get the plain because the vanilla or hazelnut types will be higher in carbs. And yes they are tasty.

If you are doing low carb, avoid rice milk obviously which is another dairy milk alternative and very tasty but rice is higher in carbs - don’t think it comes unsweetned anyhow.

I am the non-dairy queen (hahaha! just realized how that sounded ) so I hope I helped you out.

Wow, thank you for all the information Kimberly. I sure didn’t know most of that. My Daughter has an allergy but we don’t know to what. All the tests came out negative.

That Cappucino sounds Good. I’ll certainly try it. Nice that Almond milk is available in grocery stores. I meant to get some yesterday but we had so many other things to pick up that I ended up forgetting. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow. I prefer the non-Dairy Queen usually. LOL! Thanks!!

Love almond milk for shakes, cooking & baking. Blue Diamond also makes an unsweetened chocolate flavor. It’s good, but not very chocolately. I used rice milk years ago, but it’s so thin.

Catherine,

Did you get unsweetened almond milk?

Yes, in fact we have a half gallon we are working on right now. If you like the Blue Diamond, you should try the Silk brand Almond milk. We use the unflavored or ‘original’ style as we use it for protein drinks, and baking. It’s a great substitute for cows milk.

No pecuniary interest, just happy customer. Thanks for posting this!

Thank you for all of the info. I must have looked at the label for the sweetened almond milk, because your listing of ingredients and nutritional content are not what I saw. Thank you for the clarification. We will have to give it a try.

Hi Terrie,

Yes, too much dairy can cause post-nasal drip, stuffed up sinus - symptoms that look like seasonal allergies. This happened to me about ten years ago. I had a lot of post-nasal drip always clearing my throat - nose always seems stuffed up. Doctor gave me a prescription nasal spray and never did anything. I was eating alot of dairy. I had started reducing my dairy intake (for ethicial reason mostly) and it all went away! Weird. eh? Sometimes when I hear someone clearing their throats alot and they are not sick - I now wonder how much dairy they eat.

It can not necessary be an allergy per se (but it might be) but more that way too much dairy just makes your body have too much mucus that it can’t handle. Dairy is very mucus-forming. Some people with dairy allergies (or lactose intolerance) have stomach problems because they can’t digest it but too much dairy can cause some other problems too.

When I first was diagnosed with D, I was pretty weak and tired I wanted to get more protein in my diet because I was worried about that. (I am a vegan). I started eating a small block of cheese per day and had to quit because I started having achey ears and the post-nasal drip returned and once I stopped eating cheese it went away. So, go figure. Although, I hadn’t eaten dairy for 4 years prior to that. I’d rather be without it anyhow.

It may be that your daughter can still eat dairy but maybe just need to cut it down. I don’t know what her symptoms are. But can’t hurt to take a break from too much dairy and see what happens. All that mucous that is produced by dairy is hard for the body to digest and the body will need a break to clear the excess out. Water is good for too much mucous esp. with lemon in it.
