Animas Ping finally got approved by insurance

June 11, 2010 was my 1 year anniversary with Type 1.5 diabetes. Let me tell you it sure has been a roller coaster ride. And boy am I glad 2009 is over. First I was laid off in February (on my birthday) and then in June find out I have diabetes. What a year. Anyways I have been fighting my medical insurance on approving a pump for me. After 3 appeals and my last appeal going to a third party for review. I finally got approved. Any suggestions on how to prepare. Any good books out there regarding insulin pumping, andy suggestions from you pros out there on what I should be aware of. I welcome any advise to make my transition easier. God Bless You All.

Good luck, you will like the “Ping”, look for the book, Pumping Insulin", it’s an oldie but goodie and will get you through the basics as well as what to do etc. Frequent blood sugar checks are mandatory as well as counting carbs if you don’t do that now, learn how. I’ve been on the Ping for over a year but have been pumping since 1996.
Good luck,
Laura

Thank you. I am ordering that book now on amizon. How do you like pumping?

You would have to pry my pump out of my dead hands LOL. Nex to a cure it’s the only way to go, so flexible this way even with the frequent blood testing but you don’t have to eat at certain times and can really enjoy your life so much more. Most of the pump companies have good customer support so don’t hesitate to use them even if the question seems silly to you, better to ask than to be sorry, you will do fine and researching before you start is a good thing, you are heading in the right direction and will sson feel and see a big difference in your quality of life!

Awesome. The ping rocks. I have had nothing but success with it.

Using Insulin by John Walsh is another good book. It talks about mdi as well, but it explains how insulin itself works. Gives you kinda the groundwork for pumping.

Thanks to all for your comments. My ping arrived today and I was like a little kid with candy. Still part of me is nervous.
