After about a two month struggle my One Touch Ping is on it’s way. Between the back and forth he said she said argument, it was confirmed by Animas that they were just waiting to get the ok from my insurance. I don’t know why insurance companies insist on being so difficult. I attempted to order my pump back in November and then again in December. They then informed me that they wanted proof of my full time status as a student and I made sure to send and make copies of the letter I obtained from my school stating that I indeed was attending as a full time student. My insurance chose to ignore this for some strange reason and I was removed from the insurance plan because my birthday took place before I was scheduled to go back for the Spring semester, they were looking for any loop hole to keep me from keeping my insurance I guess but after a few calls and faxes I was able to receive coverage again. I’m just glad that this is finally over and I’ll be pumping soon. This is one thing I dislike about our health care system here in the United States. What’s the point of health insurance if you are given a hard time for something as important to your health as an insulin pump etc.? Especially if it will help lower your A1c yes it is a bit expensive for them but in the long run it is well worth it in my opinion.
I’m glad that it finally worked out Elly! I hope that you will have a great start with your PING! Do you know when you will actually start on it?
I highly recommend the book “Pumping Insulin” by John Walsh. I read it when I started pumping and it helped a lot!!
I actually don’t know yet, as soon as I receive my pump I’m calling my diabetic team and scheduling an appointment so if all goes well I should be pumping as soon as 2 weeks from now.
Thanks Kristin! I will definitely be purchasing this book.

Hooray for you!!! Congrats on your new pump.
I would say that insurance companies are all too powerful. They, not the doctors, control our care. This is not good!! I hate the way they control us. Their thinking, though, is that odds are you won’t be covered with them long-term. They don’t want to pay for those long-term supplies because of that. What can we do?

Yay! Congratulations! I just got my Ping recently too and am waiting to go into training class to learn how to use it.
And I have said the same thing you said to myself over and over when fighting to get the pump from my previous insurance companies. I mean, its such a small up front amount of money for a device that could very well potentially prevent more expensive and long term side effects.
I just started pumping a week ago with minimed, my insurance only paid half of the cost, but approved it right away, did yours cover all of it?
Yes, I was lucky enough to get full coverage on it.
I just returned from the Endo today. I’ve decided to go on the PING. How do you like it? Once your insurance company approved your coverage, how long did it take for you to get it.
Robyn…(new to the forum and new to pumping)
Robyn that’s awesome welcome to the club! You’re going to love it! I already do!
Well today was my first day using novolog on the pump and I have to say I’ve never been happier with my blood sugars than I was today. I received it pretty soon, about 2 business days. I actually received it a day before anticipated. I felt like a kid on Christmas! I love it and I don’t know how I’ve come this far without one. I definitely won’t be going back to shots if I have any say in the matter.
OMG…that is soooo fast!
I am very…very…nervous. I know what you mean about feeling like a kid on Christmas. I could hardly sleep last night. Actually, I had a bad night. I was hypo around 11pm, ate 15g carb, woke up again around 2am to check sugar and was okay, woke up again to take meds at 6am and my fasting blood sugar was 174!
Like…little green sugar monkeys crawl into my blood stream to wreak havoc between the hours of 3am and 6am in the morning!
I can’t wait to go on the pump. Either I under componsate my dose or I over componsate my dose.
Anywho…I feel like I’m 8 years old and my parents are taking us to Disney World on Friday! I am so excited.
Yesterday, in the doctors office, my case was turned over to the pump (insurance) specialist. So, hopefully I’ll have my pump by my birthday Feb.22 !!!
Thanks for chatting with me…
I don’t feel so lonely on the island…hahaha
Robyn
Happy Belated Birthday Robyn! I hope you’ve gotten your pump by now or it is at least on it’s way, definitely crossing my fingers for you!
