Anyone else experiencing migraine headaches as a result of better (lower) blood sugars?

I am on day 5 with my MM CGMS and I have had a migraine for almost two days straight. My average used to be around 200 and now I’ve been able to keep it around 80. I am thinking that it is because my body isn’t used to being in this range for long periods of time. Has anyone else experienced headaches as a result of better blood sugars? Is this something I should worry about? Does it go away?

Yes, it’s common to get headaches (but not migraines) with blood sugars lower than what you’re used to. A migraine is a special sort of headache with a lot of symptoms other than the pain, so I wouldn’t use that word unless that’s really what you’re having. But it is very common (at least in my experience and from what my doctor has told me) to get terrible headaches when your blood sugar stays low for a long time. And if your blood sugar had been running around 200, then a drop to 80 would probably be enough to cause this. If it’s just a terrible headache b/c of the low, then it will eventually go away and once your body gets used to staying at the lower numbers, you won’t have it anymore. If it is a true migraine though with the traditional migraine symptoms, then I would think it’s probably just a coincidence that it’s happening at the same time - or maybe just because of the stress of making a big change? I’ve had migraines all my life and diabetes since I was 11 and I’ve never heard of any connection between diabetes and migraines, although regular terrible headaches from low blood sugars are pretty common in my experience. Hope this helps and I sure hope you feel better soon! Migraines and low blood sugar headaches are the worst. <3

Thanks, it might just be a bad headache, but it made me kinda nauseous too. That hasn’t happened before. I woke up with a BS of 103 this morning and so far, no headache. Thanks for your input.

I completely agree! The only thing I would add is that if you already have chronic “migraines” low bloodsugar can be one of your triggers. It is for me. Sometimes I just get headaches, but sometimes the lows will be one of my migraine triggers, and then the migraine lasts a day or two. They’re awful

Hi !

From personal experience I can tell you everything is possible. I used to have quite high sugar most of time and after I “fixed” the problem, with better self-control, I also had problems. I was accustomed to high sugar and after getting it down, I also didn’t feel quite right. I didn’t have headaches, but I didn’t feel quite right and also my low blood sugar control (internal) led me to beleive I had low blood sugar, even if I didn’t (at 5 mmol/L)… but after some time I got used to it… You will too.
