Yup–I’ve done that. When I was on MDI I did my daily lantus and breakfast bolus first thing in the morning before coffee, and really you shouldn’t do anything before coffee. Because that moment of putting down the injector after shooting 40 units and picking up the Novolog one… only to realize oh sh*t this is the Lantus!!! is not fun. “Well this is going to be interesting…”
Seems like there’s a wide divergence on this, judging by previous threads where it has come up. I have never been a breakfast person, just coffee with light cream and splenda (light cream is near-zero carbs). I find I need to bolus that as the equivalent of about 20 carbs, or about 30 if I’m not biking to work that day. But it’s definitely one of those rule-of-thumb, YDMD situations that isn’t really covered in the instruction manuals. I think there’s some interplay between the effects of caffeine with a pretty pronounced dawn phenomenon in my case.
you are not alone by any measure. i have done that more times than i want to count. i have also forgotten to make dual boluses even when i write them down in my little food journal. then i get all my insulin in one shot, rather over the extended period of time. just last week i hit ACT to bolus, but i forgot that i did it, so i bloused again. i freaked out. this was a new one for me. i don’t know if any of you have ever double bolused and if so, how you handled it, but i was afraid to leave the house. i didn’t know if i should wait it out till i went low, or curtail it by drinking something like OVALTEIN in milk.
in the end, i waited it out, and nothing tragic happened. we’re human.
