Ataxia

About one year ago, I started noticing I was losing weight, in a kind of "wasting away" way. Then I started having a little trouble with balance. Then fatigue. No ambition to exercise, etc. Endo signed me up for an NVC and EMG. That leads to a neurologist and an MRI next Saturday of the brain, or what I have of one, lol. DX was ataxia, although it's not clear whether that's more of an overall description of the symptoms or what.

Doctors don't think it's diabetes related, although apparently it can go with neuropathy, which I don't have. Anyone else had to deal with this? General Internet summaries of prognosis are grim.

Thanks for your help.

Have you researched celiac disease? Google “gluten ataxia”. Celiac disease and diabetes are strongly linked.

Diabetic Dad & Cyclinglady: I have Celiac Disease. Out of curiosity, I googled "celiac ataxia" and found this interesting article:

http://www.livingwithout.com/issues/4_12/ataxia-2366-1.html?pg=7&zkPrintable=1&nopagination=1

Among other things, the article says that gluten sensitivity can lead to ataxia, with or without Celiac. Definitely worth reading in my opinion. Trudy

Thank you, Cyclinglady!

Celiac Disease can cause so many problems outside of the more commonly known intestinal problems (over 300 symptoms). I also have CD, plus allergies, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, and diabetes, but am managing and improving everyday. I do not have gluten ataxia or DH and I am thankful for that!
