Hey guys!!! ok, so I had no idea about what celiac disease actually is until about 3 weeks ago. I went for my check-up and the doctor told me that my previous hba1c showed that I COULD have Celiac. He told me that the symptoms were bloating and a heavy feeling in my stomach. I have none of these symptoms. The only stomach related things I felt last week were a small ache in my stomach after eating which seemed to be gone within a week. I am now waking up with stomach pain. Nothing extreme, Just regular stomach pain that lasts for half an hour. I have anxiety issues and a few days ago I thought I had MS because my leg was completely numb after waking up on Monday morning. My feet have also been twitching (near the sole area) and I saw that footwear (twitching started after I began wearing new shoes) can be the cause. I also saw that it can be anxiety related or just a trapped nerve. Being the anxious boy that I am, I decided to search my symptoms again and this time, I saw MS. Not only MS, but ALS also. From here, my anxiety levels began to rise. I was afraid to sleep on Tuesday night because I thought my leg would fall asleep again like it was doing on Monday night. I read that MS symptoms are 24 hours of numbness and tingling and mine seemed to come and go. I noticed my anxiety at last and realised that this could be causing the issue. I've been sleeping fine all week, no numbness. My fingers also felt like they were tingling on Monday night too. I forgot to mention that I exercised on Monday night after a whole week because of my college work not giving me any time-out. So right now it feels like my vision is blurry. It feels like one eye is weaker than the other. I don't know for sure. Maybe it's my anxiety making me think this. Today, I read that Celiac Disease (undiagnosed) can make sometimes make someone feel miserable, anxious and also make them have loss of appetite. I don't feel like eating lately. I One more thing I read was gluten can cause numbness. I'm sorry for writing such a long piece of text but I really need to get my feelings out to you guys. Please feel free to respond to this and if anyone can relate to this and if anyone experienced the same symptoms. Please comment below. Thanks :) :)
My main symptoms were severe diarrhea which started for no reason lasted sometimes for a month or so & then stopped for a couple of months. I also was anemic I had been taking iron pills for what seemed like forever & no change. This last is due to malabsorption, the celiac damage to the small intestine stops vitamins & minerals being absorbed properly.
There is a blood test you can take that gives an initial diagnosis.
Celiac disease can cause a whole load of seemingly unrelated symptoms, not all of which are found in the standard list of symptoms. Anxiety and fuzzy-headedness is can definitely be caused by undiagnosed CD but they are such non-specific symptoms that you cannot be sure until you are tested and then go on a gluten free diet. Personally, i had fairly classic digestive symptoms but also canker sores, tingling feet at night, sore joints, lots of peeing at night, anemia...
What I don't understand is that your doctor told you that your A1c indicated Celiac. In my knowledge there is no correlation between the two. The only link i can think of is that with undiagnosed CD you're probably absorbing only part of the food you eat so you might have more lows and a lower A1c than normal for you. Did your doctor explain his hypothesis any further?
Given the statistics, it is worth testing for CD if you have type 1 diabetes and/or any of the possible symptoms of the CD. Given your level of anxiety, it sounds like you need to see the doctor again anyway to see what could be causing your symptoms.
the tingling in the feet and hands, as well as the blurry vision can all be diabetes related. neuropathy can cause the tingling. and my vision can get blurry with a high sugar episode.
I have not been officially diagnosed, but I've self-diagnosed due to my myriad of symptoms.
Constipation, bloating, tummy upset, lack of appetite, clumsiness/dizziness/difficulty balancing, migraine and headaches, fatigue, irritability, body aches, anemia. Funnily, I wouldn't have placed my lows at the foot of gluten, but it may also be a symptom.
I am in discussions with my doctor to be tested. I was feeling quite hopeless about the way I feel until I found the list of symptoms for Celiac/gluten intolerance. Now I feel quite hopeful!
if you test negative for celiac to a gastric emptying study. constipation, bloating, tummy upset and lack of appetite are all symptoms of gastroparesis unfortunately. oh and it messes with your sugars too b/c the food sits in your stomach longer, so you can go low right after a meal b/c the breakdown is slower and then be high later b/c your insulin is used up and your still digesting food.
testing neg for celiac can also indicate a gluten sensitivity, which will not show on blood test or biospy. Something to keep in mind.
