Baby Owen's birth story

Hi All,

Things are finally beginning to settle down a bit, so I decided to share my son Owen's birth story. I am hoping that the story might provide some encouragement for those of you who are researching your options when it comes to childbirth and who might be feeling pinned down to an undesirable fate due to your status as a type 1 diabetic. Basically, I was fortunate enough to be able to have a natural, non-induced, un-medicated hospital birth, and it was wonderful! Of course, not everyone wants this type of birth and even those who do want it and work hard for it may have to change plans. I have read so so many of those "change of plans" stories, that I wanted to share my own "according to plans" story to provide a different perspective.

The story is super long, so if you'd like to read it, check out my guest post on this great blog about type 1 diabetes and natural childbirth.

Such a wonderful and encouraging story. Congratulations!!

Lauren, thank you for sharing!! It is an incredibly beautiful birth story!! Brought tears to my eyes...

Thanks for sharing your incredible story! I am also so grateful you posted the link to such an amazing site! I am at 20 weeks and struggling to find a doctor that respects my ability/knowledge about my body enough to 'allow' a natural birth. All the wonderful information/stories give me hope and strength!! Thank you!

Glad I could be helpful to you Lisa! Just try to remember that this is your birth, your baby, your body. My doctors weren't exactly gung ho about my decisions, especially the decision not to get induced. However, I respectfully let them know that I had weighed the options and decided to wait for spontaneous birth unless we had any indication that he was in distress/danger (I was very closely monitored). I think it ultimately comes down to not being afraid to tell your doctors what you want, knowing that they probably will disagree. I hope that you are able to find a caregiver who respects your choices! Best of luck to you!

I hope the same for you! Sounds like you're on the home stretch of the pregnancy. You can do it!
