I’m so happy for you, Kristin! I haven’t been on tudiabetes for a while, but I kept thinking about you and your baby, since I am also pregnant and still haven’t managed to get a CGM. So, I’m trying my best by checking my BG 15-20 times…

Congratulations and we are dying to see the photos

We are home and all is well!

Our “little” boy was born weighing in at 4230g (9 lbs 5 oz) and measuring 55cm (21.6 inches) long.

Honestly the c-section went more closely to the natural birth that I wanted than expected. I was able to see him the instant they lifted him out of me, they removed the placenta together with the baby and my husband was in an attached room where he cut the umbilical cord, they cleaned him up and dressed him warmly and brought him in next to my head where I could kiss his (HUGE) cheeks uncontrollably for able 3 minutes (one nurse even took pictures for us). Then when I came out of the surgery (about 30-40 minutes after the birth), my husband was holding our son in the recovery room and we were able to put him on my breast (though the positioning took three people) immediately and he fed for a little while before they took him away to be examined. So all in all, I would say that our birth experience was positive and I was surprised by a few things that were closer to the birth experience that I had hoped for. So have hope if you also have to have a c-section!!

I used my pump throughout the c-section and maintained blood sugars around 4.5-7.0 mmol/L (81-126 mg/dl), but needed LESS basal insulin. I was the first in the morning and was fasting. I woke up every hour the night before to check my blood sugar and since I saw a downward tendency, I turned my basal down to 70% of my pregnancy levels around 3am. After the c-section, my blood sugar was 3.9 mmol/L(70mg/dl). So my doctor let me suck on glucose tabs right away and started a glucose drip. I did not have a glucose drip during the surgery and I don’t think that anyone measured my blood sugar during the c-section (which is strange now that I think about it). My insulin needs dropped immediately on the first day and I was using 70% of my PRE-pregnancy insulin levels. By day 2 and since they, I’m using 30% of my pre-pregnancy basals and lots of snacks with NO insulin to cover for drops during breastfeeding.

His blood sugar was 2.3 mmol/L (41.5 mg/dl) when he was born, which is normal by their standards and did not require intervention (though the hospital did give him sugar water, which they give to ALL babies). His blood sugar never dropped lower than that and they were able to stop checking within 24 hours of the birth.

Breastfeeding is going well now, but was not as easy as it looks in the beginning. He is eating well and sleeping peacefully!

We came home from the hospital yesterday and I am feeling well, but will be taking it easy for a few weeks. And to all of you who know how strictly I dieted during pregnancy, I just ate PIZZA for breakfast  Yumm!!

Here are some photos.

Note that my pump is in an MP3 player case on my arm and my infusion set was on my thigh.

Congrats for your little cuttie!!
I couldn’t wait to hear from you.
I am so glad that everything went well and that you are both fine. You did great!
So your doctor was right, your little guy was big, but he was also long. I guess you and your husband are alike.
I wish you all the best and keep us posted!
Hugs for you and the little guy!

Congratulations, Kristin – He is absolutely ADORABLE (those cheeks!)!! And I am so glad to hear that things went smoothly both during and after delivery!
