Considering Mounjaro

Hey all! Been taking Jardiance for about 5 yrs but switched to a new endo and she says she won’t prescribe it. Sucks cuz it’s been really helpful in attenuating my highs, but she says “Danger! Contra-indicated! DKA risk!” She is willing to try me on Mounjaro, which she says would be more effective anyway. Wondering what anyone else has experienced with it—T1 preferably though I get that this is T2 stuff and not that many of us T1’s are on it. The one thing she said that kinda put me off is that it essentially mimics or induces mild gastroparesis, and can be accompanied by those symptoms. OTOH, it’s also an appetite suppressor and helps with weight loss, which I’ve struggled with as I age, though I do exercise regularly and eat mostly low carb. Endogenous insulin is a pain that way. Anyway, eager to hear what actual users have experienced.

I have zero personal experience with GLP1 meds although I’ve read and watched much content about them in the last several years. It looks like a game-changing way to lose weight and manage appetite, yet does represent some risk to long-term health.

I believe that the most powerful argument against their use is that lost weight comes from both body fat as well as lean tissue, about 40% in some accounts. When the medication is stopped, almost everyone does not take longer than a few years, most of the weight is regained but not muscle and bone weight.

I see, from what I’ve read, that a T1D who aims to use a minimal dose (not the doses recommended to T2Ds and those mainly seeking weight loss) can combine that with a regular strength training program to achieve beneficial outcomes without muscle and bone loss. These outcomes include significant weight loss, if needed, lower total daily dose of exogenous insulin, appropriate appetite suppression, and better overall health.

Here’s a recent video interview of Ben Bikman, PhD by Dr. Tyna Moore, Naturopath and Chiropractor. It includes a discussion of GLP1 receptor agonists and how they interact long term with metabolic health.

I took Mounjaro for several months and I am Type 1. Did I lose weight yes. Did I throw up and have stomach problems yes. Was my bloodsugar lower, of course! Eating sucked and going out for dinner was no fun. I decided I enjoyed eating and going out and eating with family and that this was not a drug for me. You literally are never hungry, and after eating a small portion, you are super full. I am currently taking Metformin ER 2000 MG and Farxiga 10 Mg both Type 2 medicines and this seems to help.

I am Type 1 and taking Mounjaro since the beginning of the year. I’m on the lowest possible dose. I exercise every day and eat mostly low carb. Even with that, I was taking 100 units a day. I’m not super overweight but I wouldn’t mind losing 25 pounds. My A1c was in the low 7s.

Since taking Mountain, I have cut my insulin usage to about 60 units a day and have already lost eight pounds. I’m hoping my next A1c will be a lot better.

I do not feel sick from it at all. Actually I feel quite good. I tried Metformin but was sick from that horribly! I hope to be able to stay at this low dose of Mounjaro for a while and get as much benefit from it as I can. I do notice the appetite suppressing feature of it. It’s helped me to eat slightly smaller meals more often which isn’t a bad thing.

For me, it’s been all good.
