Dexcom G4 Platinum on sale (Canada)

Yesterday I ordered a dexcom. I had decided on the G4 since my insurance won’t cover it so I’ll be paying out of pocket, and the transmitter lasts longer. I got in touch with Animas Canada (the distributor for the G4 system here) and was told that the cost was normally $700 for the receiver, $599 for the transmitter and $340 for four sensors, but that they were having a special right now for the entire set for just $839, while supplies last. I don’t know if it was just a marketing ploy to get me to buy the older system or if in fact that was a really good deal, but I thought I’d share just in case it was a good deal. I’m waiting for my first sensor to get started. It feels like the longest two hours ever

You caught me in my two-hour warmup period! Once you get used to seeing that stream of data, it’s hard to do without. Congrats on taking the leap. Good luck with your new cgm.

Don’t expect too much in the first 24 hours. Your dex sensor bandage adhesion may control how long your sensor lasts. Do a search on “dexcom adhesive” and you’ll find several threads talking about things like skin-tac and tegaderm. These help things stick longer.

Don’t forget to upload your data to Clarity. Looking back at your results is an under-used learning opportunity. Check it out.

I recently paid full price for a G4 txmtr so that seems like a good deal to me! I don’t use the bluetooth capability, so the G4’s are a better value (in my experience they easily go well past 6 months, whereas the G5’s time out after 3).

The pricing is totally random of course. If you buy the G5 transmitters, you get two for the same price as one G4. Since the G4 is warranteed for 6 months, and the G5’s are each warranteed 3 months I guess this makes some odd sort of sense, but from the perspective of manufacturing cost it’s obviously just totally made up.

That said, I’m a big fan of CGMs, hopefully you will be too. As you may already know, there is LOTS of CGM info/discussion on everything from adhesion to calibration on this forum.

I just ordered a new box of sensors ($340) and, since my transmitter has lasted 13 months so far and could die any day, I asked about any sales on transmitters. I was told that the price has (it sounded like possibly permanently) been reduced from $800 to $599 to make it more affordable. Since my insurance covers nothing, this made me quite happy! Still expensive, but every little bit helps.

Still, at $599 for the transmitter and $340 for a box of sensors ($939 total), you might be better off replacing your receiver too whenyour transmitter goes if the deal for all three at $839 is still available.

Even with the price permanently reduced, I must have actually got a good deal  yay!

True! I paid $1,840 for the whole package when I started. I’ve already bought a box of sensors, but it may still be worth buying the whole package since it would mean getting $100 off the sensors and a free receiver, essentially. And then I could go a whole six months or more before needing more sensors.
