I will be flying for the first time with the dexcom this Friday. I’ve been told by my CDE to wear the receiver and not to send it through security in my bag and just to alert the TSA attendant that I’m wearing it. For those of you who have worn your receiver–does it cause the metal detector to beep? My minimed pump has never been detected by a metal detector. Any tips on travel?
I have traveled frequently with the sensor on and just put the reciever in my purse or with my watch as it goes through on the belt. Same with my insulin. NEVER been stopped, asked or anything. No problems at all.
I tend to remove both when walking thru security just to avoid the hassle and delays - especially if it is busy. I have left the CGM on once or twice by accident and something alarmed (pump doesn’t typically). For about 6 months after getting the Dexcom I was flying 2x a week or more - no problems sending it thru the metal detector.
I’m the same as kjrider – I just put the receiver in the tray with my iPhone, keys, etc, and send it thru. Haven’t even thought about the sensor, but it’s never been picked up by a scanner – and I think I’ve even been wanded since I’ve had it.
I do what Dan says, I put the receiver in the tray together with phone and keys, no problems at all.
In case of a full body scan machine, I tell the TSA agent upfront that I have a sensor on me, so that they can tell the agent in front of the screen that they will see something slightly odd. Never had a problem with that either.
I have not had trouble flying with it at all. I just wore the sensor and the receiver was in my carry on- they never questioned me (have flown 4 times with it). You shouldn’t have any trouble…
Even with the pump, which I keep on, it isn’t a big deal. They scan you and then afterwards make you run through a quick procedure where they have you pat your pump and then wipe your hand on a pad which they scan. I’ve flown about 6 times in the last 3 months and it has been real quick every time. Extra couple minutes.
I’ve been deliberating my plan of action because I’m moving to France (for a year) on Friday. I’m taking a year-long supply of everything diabetes related. I’ll have a cooler with many vials of insulin and in my carry-ons will be all the essentials, but lots of them. Every time I’ve traveled, I’ve done what many of you have suggested, just put everything through and no one bothers me (my minimed never sets off the alarm). I’ve just been wondering if the sheer number of supplies and insulin will raise any flags, and if this is the case, would they be less accommodating if I also went through security setting all the beeping off. I’m probably over thinking it but it’s just those horror stories that freak me out!
