Diabetes Advocates Conference Scholarships Announced

One of the important programs of the Diabetes Hands Foundation is Diabetes Advocates. This year, Diabetes Advocates has announced a huge number of scholarships to attend important events throughout the year, including the:

  • 75th Scientific Sessions of American Diabetes Association
  • Friends For Life
  • Diabetes Advocates MasterLab at Friends For Life
  • American Association of Diabetes Educators Conference

These scholarships were made possible through the generous support of Abbott Diabetes Care, BI-Lilly Alliance, Dexcom, Janssen, Novo Nordisk, and Medtronic. I am deeply honored to receive one of these scholarships and in less than two weeks I will be setting of with our fellow member @Rphil2 to Boston. Please look forward to reports from both of us on the experience.

For the full details of all the scholarships and lists of the recipients check out this post on Diabetes Advocates by @mrmikelawson

Brian - Congrats on getting the scholarship to the ADA scientific sessions. I missed it last year when I traveled as the meeting was held in my home town.

While I 'm curious about some of the scientific findings that are released, I 'm really interested in the evolution of the doctor/patient relationship. Will there be any patient panels that the doctors will attend? I feel like the doctors in general have a distorted view of who we are and why we do what we do. I’m sure doctors must feel the same disconnect with us.

I look forward to your report and I intend to virtually follow these sessions as much as I can. Have fun!

Thanks Terry. The ADA Scientific Sessions has traditionally been a professional conference and patients have not even been considered a relevant audience let alone being worthy of speaking. But that is changing. While I don’t believe there are any presentations or panels there will be some representative patients taking part in some of the program and the concept of patient centered care is really prominent. A general overview of the program is available here and there is more detail on-line.

That is great, Brian! Congrats! I registered for the FFL conference in Feb, and booked my flight for Tues. We will get to Orlando about 5:30 PM that day. That will be too late for me to attend the Advocates MasterLab meeting. I will attend the review scheduled Wed morning. Later that day I am a scheduled speaker for the FFL at 3:30 PM.
