Diabetes and Dating&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*

I have a general rule, I wait for the fifth or so date before ‘coming out’ of the diabetes closet. Because I’ve had diabetes since I was 5 and am coming up on 30. I know that its a huge part of who I am, but on the other hand I will not let it define me.

Are there any thoughts on this?
Has anyone felt that their diabetes wears on their dating life?

Hi, Shore, this is a much-discussed topic here. If you go to the forum and search for the word “dating”, there are nine pages of discussions. So, I will send you a link here of one that has many replies. Although I’ve been married for 23 years, it never was a problem for me, and I wear my pump “out” all the time. Most people hardly even notice it.

I’m usually open about it. It makes for a small conversation piece, but I never expect anyone to have sympathy for me, or to be burdened by it. If anything, I have a sense of humor about it, like I’d tell her how many carbs she’s eating. haha Or when I was MDI, I’d say “time to shoot up again!”

I really don’t let it affect me socially. Sometimes I get that label,“the diabetes guy,” but otherwise don’t really care.
