Diabetes and the Swine flu - would you consider us at greater risk

So the media has pretty much beaten the topic of swine flu to death today, and it`s really starting to scare me. There are already some mild cases in the atlantic provinces such as nova scotia…the only ferry port to travel back and fourth the island is from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia… so that’s a bit scary. Although there are no actual confirmed deaths outside of Mexico, do you believe the strain will mutate into a deadlier form of influenzaÉ … I wonder if Diabetics came in contact with this disease if our survival rate would be lessened to that of a non-diabetic…

yup… being the health freak that I am, i`m even sightlier freaked out

Uncontrolled diabetes can compromise your immune system, so in a general sense I would say yes, but conditional upon how well you have things managed.

US Center for Disease Control updating Swine Flu page

The following article gives some great hints for what you can do to protect yourself from Swine Flu. Jane Jeffrie Seley, MPH MSN GNP BC-ADM CDE, points out that since people with diabetes are considered at higher risk for any seasonal influenza (flu) complications, we must assume that the same is true of swine-origin influenza A (H1N1). Symptoms of H1N1 are similar to other flu symptoms and include fever, chills, body aches, headache, cough, sore throat and fatigue. You should contact your healthcare professional if you have severe symptoms of flu since it may worsen your blood glucose control and you may need more aggressive treatment. Visit the CDC online for further information about swine-origin influenza A and ways to protect yourself, or call 800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636) 24 hours day.

The Swine Flu and Diabetes

Umm theres actually one case of death outside of Mexico. In Houston Texas. I actually think we should be more careful about this swine flu. I am glad i wasnt one of them because i heard it does mess up your immune system and it is worst if you have any other health conditions.

Dear Jill.

Hard to say if this will mutate into a far more deadly one like the 1918 H1N1.

I seem to had less flu since I became diabetic. Not sure why go for annual flu shoots free here for diabetics and their families.

If we have reduced immune responses that is actually good since in 1918 the strongest and youngest did first because of a excessive immune response.

That death is counted as being in Texas because the child died here, but he was clearly infected in Mexico, and brought up from the border area to the excellent hospitals in Houston because of the seriousness of his illness; he also had pre-existing serious health conditions.

I heard that it’s highly infectious but not virulent. I don’t know if I personally would be able to fight a bad case of flu, I got a minor bug this year and it nearly killed me. I always get the usual flu vaccines each year. Hopefully my health has improved to the extent that I’d get through. Would worry about the children though. Listening to the radio, doctor and experts say that there will be many more cases but it won’t kill us.

I have been following all of this swine flu, as I am a diabetic. What concerns me is that we have booked a cruise out of Galveston next month to Cozumel and Merida. Should I be concerned and cancel our trip? My husband and I both have compromised immune systems (he has chronic lymphocytic leukemia - currently in remission for the 3rd time). Is it worth the risk? I thought about just staying on the ship and foregoing all shore trips, but the people who DO go ashore would just bring the virus onto the ship. Any suggestions?

Some people have suggested that if you talk to your tour provider you could get your money back or book a holiday somewhere else. It will probably end up with the insurance companies. I would be more concerned about being on a longhaul flight.

I was supposed to fly to Cozumel, Mexico tonight, flying through Houston. I cancelled my trip. There are no documented cases of H1N1 in Cozumel, but I did not want to take any chances. I have two autoimmune diseases: Type 1 diabetes and Hashimoto’s Disease. I have great control, but did not want to take the risk. My doctors think I made the right call.

However, I am bummed to not be on a sunny beach or out snorkeling :frowning:

Swine flu is being blown WAY out of proportion in my opinion. Regular seasonal flu is far deadlier than Swine flu, could it mutate sure, a lot of things could happen. You have a better chance at getting killed in a car accident than dying from swine flu or even contracting it.

Dave

Oh then the news are kinda weird. Cause i heard he was on vacations in brownsville and all the other border cities but he was a Mexican living in Houston.

Hopefully you are right.

Right on Dave. The Media has hyped this not just reported it. Use common sense. If you feel ill or run down stay home if you can. I am certain diabetes runs us into a higher risk group - that’s why they always tell us to get flu shots. As far as this flu (H1N1) it is not that deadly here in the USA yet (only the one death in TX) - but that COULD change. Yes stay away from Mexico - right now - if you can. Pandemic is a scary sounding word any way you look at it.

yes Danny.

I think this is French but when Doris Day sang it she prononced que = kay which is not French.

Anthony I am lost yet again

Seek and you shall find. Que = what sera = will be

Yes but what has this got to do with Doris Day
