Diabetes and vision loss

After a year and a bit, finally had my second cataract operation. I was diagnosed at 40 (October 2010) with diabetes after I lost my vision and my world became blurred. After realizing my eyes were damaged, the optician referred me to my GP, who noted that my glucose levels were over 29 and booked me into ICU on an insulin drip. It then took three months to try and stabilize the glucose levels until the ophthalmologist was okay with the first cataract removal and intra-ocular implant. Then a year of further strict diet control and exercise. A year later, getting my brain to adjust to two differently focussed eyes, and feeling like I've been living in a steam room, I've had the second cataract removed and it is amazing to have my sight finally restored.

My diabetes story is one of genetics, as both my grand mother and great grandmother were diabetics. The difference then was that they developed it much later in life - in their 60s.In their world of a century and more ago, it was a different outcome with little hope.

Reading TuDiabetes has helped educate and encourage me over these last few months - thanks to all ...

TuDiabetes has reminded me through images, poems and many other personal expressions of the message of hope.

Oh that is quite scary indeed. I agree though about the importance of a diabetes community who know what you are going through and are there for support...it helped me out a lot too. Hopefully together we can all work for a cure and begin eliminating the risk of such complications for good.

Congrats! I had cataract removal/implants in both eyes last July/August. I agree, it sure is nice to be able to see clearly! Totally agree that TuD is a wonderful place.
