I have a few diabetic cookbooks and most of the recipes have foods that I never have or the protein amount is more than I need for that meal. I would like to find a cookbook that could really help me stay on a good eating plan and also had recipes that my son would like to. He's really not that hard to please. Also I am living on low income.
I've never found a good diabetic cookbook because they're too high carb for me. Or, they're just regular recipes that sub out artificial sweeteners for sugar. Like anyone needs a cookbook for that. Since I eat low carb, there are many wonderful low carb recipe sites--free! Nice thing is that the carb counting is included.
I haven't bought it, but this cookbook looks good http://amongfriends.us/, if you're interested in low carb.
In my view, most published "diabetic" cookbooks are based on faulty ADA like nutrition guidance and are useless. The ones that fit my model of a healthy diabetic diet are low carb. The problem with low carb is that that most of the emphasis in these cookbooks is making "mock" high carb foods. Instead, I tend to cook from scratch with whole foods choosing dishes that are inherently low carb.
This week, I made Chicken Divan from epicurious.
I like the America's Test Kitchen Cookbooks. Sometimes the recipes are a bit more involved but they do an interesting job explaining "we tried it the traditional way but here's why it's better this way".
Now that is a good idea, Judith.
I use 500 Low carb recipes by Dana Carpender. I went to AMAZON they sent me to I think Albris (sp) and I got a new one for $8/ Good Luck.
Thank you for all your suggestions. I ordered a couple of the books from the library. I just wish it were the healthy foods that were the least expensive and not the high carb unhealthy foods that were the easiest to get. I also have a problem with emotional eating, I think. I have seen that some of you have A1C's below 6. My A1C last time was 7. But for the last ten years it has always been below 7. I don't know if it's possible for me to get below 6. I start feeling low when I'm in the 70's. I sure am glad I found this site. Sorry for the rambling on.
STOP emotional eating by keeping BUSY. Call someone. Write letters. Crochet. Knit do something. Close the kitchen at 8. Do not BUY the snacks you are tempted to eat. Go for a walk. Read. Do you know STRESSED SPELLED BACKWARDS IS DESSERTS. It is hard. I lost 56 pounds and have kept it off 16 years. My A1C is 5.9. I keep a food Journal. I am 84 and if I can do it so can you. Reed
I started with Diabetic Cooking for Dummies cookbook. It has a good recipes with great basic diabetes education.
