dLife article on diabetes & marijuana

Just got this. Interesting.

I’m glad to see the article touch on a serious contraindication for medical marijuana for diabetics - the munchies.

Where are the Cheetos, man?

I’d better get some complications!

Here’s an paper about the effect of krill oil on the endocannabinoid system. Apparently manipulation of this system by outside inputs like krill oil and marijuana, is a promising area of research for the treatment of obesity and diabetes.

It makes the recent decision of the federal government to keep marijuana in the same class of drugs as heroin i.e. those with no medical use, particularly baffling. From the article it would even seem possible for plant breeders to eliminate the high. That being so perhaps the munchies could also be bred out, or perhaps modified to eliminate the cheeto’s craving and substitute a craving for a more D friendly food like celery stalks:)

Boo plant breeders!

I think I am going to start using it… Ummmm, smoking it, eating it? Yep

Might help with my eyes. Better than popping pain meds to mess up my liver.

LOL you don’t need 'em, it lowers your bg

Baffling you say? I counter with ridiculous! Sorry, but IMO it’s less harmful than legal ‘highs’, like alcohol. Wonderful for pain, sleep, etc. It makes no sense to me. Delaware (my state) just legalized marijuana for medical use, along with some form of same sex marriage (both about time!). Apparently it’ll be a couple of years until the logistics are worked out.

I always had the theory that marijuana helped with D. This is from my own experience. I don’t use any drugs (except for alcohol) any more, but back in college I would use marijuana everyday. At that time, I did a terrible job at taking care of myself… not related to marijuana use. I lived for a whole summer, losing 30+ lbs while omitting insulin and eating crap (oreos, rice, CARBS & FAT). I went home for a visit (and did not have access to marijuana for a couple of days) and BOOM! my first DKA. I think I should have gone into DKA way before this, based on my actions and how I was feeling. I never felt “good” all summer… I was definitely sick, but I think not smoking my usual dose of cannabis may have been what did me in. This is just a theory and I want to stress that I have no proof from scientific evidence, etc. I would not recommend discontinuing insulin and replacing it with a joint. LOL

The “munchies” side effects are definitely a concern with using medical marijuana for D. Not really what you eat, but the fact that you lose the ability to measure portions.

Oh, I dunno kphil… if it were chocolate cake, I think I could manage to measure

Down with Babylon!

Robyn, here’s an article going into how compounds on marijuana help with diabetic retinopathy. This is real science. Apparently marijuana works in multiple ways to attack the cause of the problem, in the words of the lead researcher Dr. Liou "How good do you want a drug to be?”.

You are lucky to live in a state where it is possible to use this to protect your eyes without breaking the law. Faced with a similar situation in my state (Arkansas) I could wind up in the slammer.

I’ve had the same concern in DE. My conclusion is… go ahead, bust a 60 yo lady. I just won’t compromise myself for some, IMO, stupid law.

Scrambled eggs. I read somewhere that the trick is to fry it in butter and then freeze the butter in which case scrambled eggs would work. I have been eating broccoli, spinach and chia seeds in my eggs for a couple of months now so I probably wouldn’t even notice?

Sorry ar, rather have a brownie

LOL love it:) Unfortunately his happy dance wasn’t nearly as entertaining, more like an Alan Alda (some resemblance) dance.

yeah but that “just one more bite” can be hard to resist!

LOL too true
