Do I have to upgrade to Dexcom G7?

I just received my latest shipment from Byram of my Dexcom supplies. I use the G6 and am very happy with it. But my delivery was of nine G7’s. I didn’t ask for this, and don’t really want to make the change. What do i need to do to use the new sensors? Do I need a software upgrade to my Tandem T-Slim pump? I see there is a “Change Sensor Type” option on my pump, which is greyed out (probably because my sensor is still active?) I don’t want to use the back of my arm. Can I still use it on my abdomen? I really don’t want to deal with this. Thanks for any advice.

They have been warning that g 6 will end and slowly it’s happening.
Your pump will accept the new sensor if its is updated to the latest software.
If it already shows the g7 then it is upgraded however there were different versions of g7 early on so check on the website to make sure you have the most recent version on your pump.

Then it’s actually easier to use the g7. Just enter or scan the code.
You need to get the g7 ap from the ap store though if you want to use all the dexcom stuff
There is no transmitter anymore. It is built into the sensor.

The sensor inserter is different a bit. Take off the cap and press against your skin. You need to push hard enough to compress a spring and then hit the button and it will insert.
Then stop the g6 sensor on your pump and start a g7 sensor and you are off and running

You can put the sensor anywhere the g6 went as well as your arms.
It really is not a bad transition.

Do you have to upgrade? No. But since either your doc changed your prescription or Byram is pulling yet another scam do you want to put the effort into changing back?

Use all your spare G6 sensors before you start using the G7 so you don’t deplete your spares.

After I received my first batch of G7 sensors I waited until I hit the end of life of my then current G6 transmitter. Then I used one G7 sensor just to make sure there weren’t any issues between the pump, phone, and G7 (there weren’t). Then I switched back to G6 and finished my supply because I definitely didn’t want to waste any of them.

My understanding is that G6 is being phased out. Don’t think anyone will find transition difficult. Startup much faster.

Interesting and frustrating that they switched it without you choosing to make the switch! I just ordered a 3 month supply of G7 from Byram, and was sent only a 1 month supply, and was told there’s a shortage of G7s so they’re only sending a month at a time. How odd they sent you a 3 month’s supply when you didn’t even request it!

I did try to go back to the G6, as about 1/3rd of the G7s I’ve used have been wildly inaccurate. They said I’d have to get a new RX for the G6 and might not be able to switch back. The good news is that the newer G7s do seem to be (slowly) improving in accuracy, for me at least. Since I use the Mobi and the CIQ, it’s super frustrating when it will show my BG rising or dropping when it’s not, in fact, and the pump (or I) adjusts insulin based on those incorrect numbers. I’ve requested many replacement sensors after several days of this.

I wear them on my thigh and that works as well as the arm for me. An essential trick I learned here - I insert the new G7 at the beginning of the 12 hour grace period, but don’t start it until the old one has completely stopped, or at least til it’s been “soaking” for 6-10 hours. By then it’s usually as accurate as the previous one.
