I am having some hormone issues. I have not had a cycle in a couple of months (I am not pregnant) and have had a skin infection on my face for a month that won’t heal. I have used neosporin and it just won’t go away. I will be seeing the doc about that. Any other women with a similar expierence?
I have read that diabetes does affect our hormones. Our insulin needs are influenced by changing hormone levels especially during the monthly periods. Since diagnosed, my monthly scheules have moved a few days before or after the “expected” days. Furthermore, I noticed that my blood glucose fluctuations are more drastic during the cycle.
High BG can mess with cycles, particularly if you also have thyroid problems. Diabetes in conjunction with thyroid issues is unfortunately common in women. Thyroid problems in non-diabetic women is common, too.
Infections & slow healing can also be linked to high BG.
I guess I should check that out as a possible cause. My bg has been all over the place but has been going up from small amounts of food that normally wouldn’t cause such a dramatic spike. My pancrease seems rather irritable latley.
When you have thyroid tests, make sure your doctor writes an Rx for free T3 & free T4, not just TSH levels. You should also have a test for thyroid antibodies. There’s a group here on hypothyrodism with lots of info.
Have you spoken with your endo about BG spiking? Highs cause further burn out of your beta cells, along with other damage.
Thanks for the info. I have spoken to her and at this point they are thinking MODY and I guess are not sure how to treat it. A few weeks ago I kept having low bg (52) and now all of a sudden am at the other extreme. So exhausting!
Is exhausting:(
If your diabetes is an autoimmune disease (type 1) then you are more likely to develop additional autoimmune dieases like Hashimoto’s thyroditus that can affect your cycle. Are your BG’s running very high right now? The open sore may have started as an insect sting or bite but you need to be concerned about infection especially if your BG’s are on the high side. Please make an appointment with your endro as soon as you can and good luck!
P.S. when I have a reaction to an insect bite or sting, I circle any redness as soon as I see it so I can tell if the reaction is spreading over time. If the redness spreads and/or I start to run a temperature I get to my doctor as soon as possible in order to avoid staff or other MRSA infection.
I concur with others. Wounds that don’t heal and shorter, heavier cycles are consistent with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. I have the same symptoms, though I’ve been on meds for a while.
I was told I was T2 for a long time, then developed the thyroid disease. They ran a test for antibodies against my thyroid and it came back wildly positive. That made them change their focus, and eventually correctly diagnose me as a T1.
thanks for everyones advice. I went to my gp about the sore on my face and was told it was yeast and to put lotrimin cream on it and it would take care of it. I did and it is a lot better!! I also asked about my missed cycles and he thinks it is from going on such a low carb diet.
How many carbs do you eat daily?
I’ve researched low carb & never read that low carb causes hormonal changes. I think your GP just wanted to give you an answer:)
High carb diets & high BG are linked to candida (yeast) problems. There’s also research linking candida to hormonal changes. Glad it’s better!
