We have several boxes of humalog pens with a February 2012 expiration date that will expire before we could possibly use them. I hate to just throw away hundreds of dollars of insulin knowing there are people who could use it. Since they’re a prescription item, I’m not comfortable sending them off to an individual I don’t know, so I’m wondering if there are any organizations that would accept them.
I contacted our local pharmacist, and he didn’t have any idea of where I could donate these pens. Any organizations you know of that would accept these and give them to people who need them?
I was going to suggest Insulin For Life USA but they want insulin that has at least 5 months until it expires, and it sounds like yours has 4 months.
Can your dr. or clinic take it? I know some drs and clinics will take them to give as ‘samples’ to patients who want to try a new insulin or to patients who might be going through a rough time of affording their prescriptions.
I checked with our doctor and our local JDRF affiliate. They referred me to a local clinic for the poor, but they can’t take it either because they have a pharmacy on site and there is some law about certain classes of pharmacy not being able to accept donated medicine.
I wonder if I can figure out a way to withdraw the insulin from the pens and use it to fill my son’s pump resevoir. At least it wouldn’t just go to waste that way.
