Fasting blood test

There I was awake and up at 4am and longing for a cup of coffee, but I needed to get a blood test for the A1C thingie. So being good I made do with a glass of water (definitely does not substitute for the first coffee of the day). Then I began to shake and feel dizzy. My bsg was 3.6! Munching on glucose tablets I decided I was wasting my time but stuck it out with no coffee and no breakfast. But no, the dr. could not do the blood test so I have an appointment for next week.
How do you guys manage this fasting blood test thing? One good thing, the dr. has reduced my metformin dose.

Fasting for an A!C ?? Should not be needed ...the 2-3 month test . Fasting is needed for chol testing : ...12 hours ; water OK ...sometimes Doc wants an 8 hour fasting for ??? ...I have not had this done for ages . Googling did not help me clarifying ...maybe you want to check with your Doc , why fasting ?
It's a bit easier to handle , when pumping : pump goes on temporary basal ...ie less basal during the night ...off to the lab first thing in the AM .

Nel, here they do a fasting test for the A1C. He wouldn't do it as I had eaten some glucose tabs. Grrr.

Nel is right, the A1c does not require fasting. I don't believe a conservative correction won't taint a cholesterol test. You had a "mild" hypo 3.6 mmol/L (65 mg/dl). If you had corrected with a single Dex4 tab or a few smartie tabs, you would have been in the 80-90s and been fine. I would not even have mentioned it to the doctor. Your cholesterol is only affected when your blood sugar goes above normal and your body converts the extra blood sugar to triglycerides. Doctors are weird on these things. I had a doctor tell me that having tea tainted a fasting test.

Hi Pastelpainter. I had my A1C among other tests yesterday; no fasting. I'm dreading the results though. My insulin turned bad at 22 days on the first day of Standard Time giving me a BG of 350. I've been high every day since, every single day. Been too inactive because they lowered my thyroid med (that was a mistake). I'm going to have an awful A1C!

I have had a low requiring glucose tabs on the morning of a fasting metabolic test, didn't tell them, just took the test. I really doubt that it makes much of a difference. Good luck next week!

We always have to fast for an A1C, but maybe he is checking cholesterol as well. Usually we get the whole lot from this one test, not just A1C. We are only allowed to drink water and not even that after a certain time. I see I shouldn't have been honest about the glucose tablets, will know next time. Thanks guys for your advice.
