Food is controlling me!

I originally posted this discussion under Comments, (mistake) so now now it's in the right place!
Hello, well my therapist tells me I need to spend at least 30min a day here getting support, lol! I have posted here before and have gained a lot of good information here and from other sources. The problem is that even though I know what I need for me, I don't follow through! I was dx'd Oct 2010, I did really good in the beginning but have fallen off the wagon so to speak. When I have had a problem in my life before, I tackled it and gotten control(instant gratification)but with diabetes it's never ending! I want to eat everything I can't have, I feel like I'm trying to kill myself slowly. I go to sleep asking God to help me over this addiction to food and wake up ready to work on it but by the end of the day, I've blown it again. I got a reminder card that it's time for my 6 mo check up but I don't want to go and disappoint myself and the Dr as I know all my numbers will be up!

I can relate. It is so easy to ignore Diabetes. Keep going to your appointments & reach out for as much support as possible. I was in complete denial for about 6-7 years and ended up with Coronary Artery Disease. I still struggle daily. Don't give up !

The major problem with any long term disease is it required a total change in lifestyle... You can't "go on a diet" to fix things but you have to change your way of eating for the rest of your life... I'm dealing with 2 life long issues at the moment, I have type 2 diabetes and have since 1998... second one is I have thyroid cancer( read that as no longer have a thyroid) and I have mets in my lungs... I have to deal with both by lifestyle changes that I will take with me always... No quick fix for me, but I can and will live a very healthy life and I plan on it being a nice long life.

Be Strong and Stay Positive!

H :),

I completely understand what you mean. I've been T1 for about 20 years, but since I was diagnosed as an infant I never really learned to deal with it completely solo. Since moving out on my own and taking full responsability for my health about a year ago, I've been learning a lot about taking care of myself...
Here's the thing: with diabetes, ...i get what you mean. It feels like it's always never ending. It's not going anywhere though, so one big thing is to reconize what you can use to be successful with your glucose control. Do you have friends or family members who you can ask for help? I find that when I'm really struggling, it helps SO much to have support nearby.

Don't be afraid to ask for help. This diagnosis is huge, and help makes such a difference :)

p.s.: Don't worry about disappoinging your doctor. your medical team is there to support you. Tell them if you're struggling - they may be able to offer you additional resources. :).
