my friend passed away last week and since then i have had hard time dealing with their loss. my sugars have been awful! it is making me feel sick on top of sad. how do you handle grief and keep sugars down?
Grief is horrible. The last thing we want to do is take care of ourselves when we are grieving. You HAVE to. Your friend would want you to. Keep checking your BS, give yourself the correct amounts, and stay on top of it. Your doctor can also advise you how to handle the extra stress on yourself, but its causing your BS to be high. Hang in there.
im so sorry for your loss…
knowing that youre running high you might want to check every hour. if indeed you are trending high consider upping your basal just a bit to cover…or you can bolus every 3 or 4 hours to cover. and don’t forget to check for ketones. the last thing you need is to become very ill on top of everything youre dealing with.
do you meditate? take some time to just be accepting of your feelings without judgement. i know it sounds too simple but it really is beneficial.
I’m so sorry your friend died. Grief and stress do affect your levels. Dana and boedica are right – you must try to continue taking care of yourself, testing and adjusting your meals and insulin if you use insulin. I remember after my mom died I didn’t want to take care of myself either. My husband kept nagging me to do the right things. Do it for your friend’s memory - take care of yourself. I think the meditation idea is super. Let us know if you try it, what it is like for you. You might also want to google “grief support” and join a support group in your area or online. Talking with others who have lost loved ones can be very helpful. It helped me after my father died.
I’m very sorry for your loss, hb. And I imagine the stress hormones aren’t helping your sugars. I advise you to just keep checking your numbers and responding with insulin as necessary. Take baby steps. Don’t commit to control and balance right now if you aren’t up to it. Just commit to monitoring. Commit to paying attention to the carb counts and the insulin dosages. The rest can be added when you are feeling more focused.
