Frustrated!

sometimes my insulin works and sometimes it don’t so hence the high blood sugars and then the drastic lows…for some no real reason why we are resistance to the insulin.,…also my resistance is due to gastiorporisis which sucks lol…I use to keep a diary of everything from my blood sugars to what type of foods I ate. so the doctor has a idea what is the cause of the highs also kept my diary with my moods…that helps to.

I was told by my new endo to go in if my BG is over 300 and I can’t get it down. Before my coma, I was running in the 400 - 600 - HI range. I don’t ever want THAT to happen again!

The key word for me, is if I can’t get it down. I’m on insulin, so I SHOULD be able to get it down, but in your case, you just have to wait for your body, which is obviously failing rapidly.

The insulin resistance goes away as the BG comes down, but when you’re running very high, it can take a lot of insulin to get it down. That is where I didn’t know what I was doing – I was trying to correct 500’s with my normal correction factor, and it didn’t work. So if you’re above 300, and it’s not coming down, you DO need insulin, and since you don’t, at this time, really know how to use it, you need help, as far as I can tell. Either the doc helps you (best scenario), or the ER helps you. Good luck!

I called my dr this morning and told them I need to see the doctor NOW! They called back and told me to come in today at 2:45. I’m trying to figure out how many carbs or what I should eat before going into the office so my bg will be high but I’m kinda worried about feeling sick while I’m there…any ideas?

Eat a healthy brunch! Wholegrain cereal, banana, wholegrain toast. Maybe about 12 noon? Don’t worry about going high - lots of us have unintentionally or intentionally walked around with stratospheric BGs and we’ve still lived to tell the tale… Good luck and hope you are sufficiently ‘armoured’ to get what you need.

Hi LiL MaMa. You have your log showing the high bg’s… If it were me, I’d like to be in a normal enough range to have my wits about me. High or low, I get moods, get confused, have to work hard to be “normal”–not the way I’d want to deal with my doctor. At any rate, good luck in getting that insulin.

Thats exactly what I was worried about Trudy…when I am high I am just in a “fog” and cannot concentrate or think straight and I need to be on top of my game to speak truth with my doctor. Maybe I’ll just eat somethin to make me around 220. Thanks for the advice guys.

Sit yourself down and write a set of three questions you would like the drs help answering. That is all you need. Bring that paper with you and use that to help guide your meeting. I actually give my doctor the paper. I’d then just go have a 30g of carb lunch like you were told by the ADA. Choose something where the carb content is known, not something you have defend that you counted properly. Do you really want to go into the doctor showing them how good you have been doing eating no carbs and exercising like crazy? No, you want them to see what your actual carb tolerance looks like.

Thanks bsc sounds like a plan :)…Just went to eat a lunch of 25 carbs but my bg is 163…should I go ahead and eat it???

If it were me, I’d not only eat it, but I’d be sure some fast carbs were in there too – they raise you higher faster. Ideally, you’d like to see the 300-something you saw before – that’s undisputable!
I REALLY hope this results in your getting appropriate treatment. If he really does decide on insulin, just remember they start slow, so you won’t see dramatic results at first, but if he’s on top of the case, your BGs should start going down consistently and noticeably.
Really hoping for the best!

YES, and more!

Just got home from the doctor he took one look at my numbers on my blood sugar log and immediately stood up and said “I’ll be right back, I’m going to get you an insulin pen” as I’m sittin there freakin out!! lol I didnt even have to plead my case or anything he told me I need fast acting insulin NOW. He put me on the humulog pen. The nurse showed me how to use it but I still do not think I am comfortable…I’ll have to watch some youtube videos or something. I asked him for a junior pen so I could start on 1/2 untis but he said NO. He told me my last cpeptide was very low and he still couldn’t believe how low my A1C was in correlation with how low my cpeptide was.

So here is what he put me on before every meal:

1unit for every 15 carbs as long as my bg is under 150

if my bg is 150-199 2 units with 15 carbs

200s 3 units

300s 4 units

I will start tomorrow night at dinner time while my husband is home with me. Thanks for all of the support and advice I have received from you all on this tiring journey onto insulin, you are all such a blessing!

I am really that your doctor finally agreed that you need insulin! I know you will get everything figured out.

“Alrighty Then.” I’m sure that was a relief. Just sit yourself right down. Take a deep breath. And just tell yourself "It is going to be ok."

You’ve gone through a lot of stress with this. It will take some time to get adjusted to insulin, but hopefully you can now “move on.” I’d like you to think about not fretting over each meal and worrying about every little high blood sugar. Your goal is to just do your best and to realize that you actually you will be fine. You know we will be here.

Oh my mind is now at rest I can finally relax now and I feel so relieved!! Worried about the unknown of course but am soooooo RELIEVED and will just take it a day at a time. How is your insulin regimen going??

Yes, any mention of Lantus or Levemir? I would think you probably need a bit of one of them. Congratulations on getting the humulog pen, you’ve earned it!

He said I am still okay at breakfast time and fasting so he said right now I am just in need of fast acting insulin for lunch and dinner but I will in the future end up needing it for breakfast as well and eventually a basal when the time comes.
I’ve already seen a dietician when I was first diagnosed I told him I already know everything they are going to teach me and would rather not waste my money lol I’m pretty much a carb counting pro. I will go back on February 14th and am supposed to call if I have any problems before then.

Question…after starting fast acting insulin and giving my pancreas its MUCH overdue needed break should I expect my pancreas to “spurt” back to life?? And if so would I need to be on alarm for a low 24/7 or just for the 4 hours after my fast acting dose??

He did the islet antibody test which came back negative but at my appointment 6 weeks ago he did tell me I was LADA and today he told me I was very insulin deficient and had a very low c-peptide. Yes I do but I’m not really sure how it works…so what TYPE of carbs do I need to eat as my 15 grams?

so good to hear…keep glucose tabs if they work fast enough for you always keep that type of stuff on hand…I do and also always keep honey for my lows…good luck

with my first pump I used Humalog and now I use Novolog with this new pump…weird lol but have way less lows with novolog
