Gastro paresis comes from damage to your vagus nerve. It happens the same way that neuropathy happens.
The nerve sheath wears down from high sugar and a acidic ph in the blood and tissues.
This can cause pain and numbness, but in the case of your vagus nerve, it just stops working. It’s job is to tell your stomach to contract, and move food allong, without it,food it sits in there longer.
As with all nerves, it can be healed with tight glucose control and about 3 months time. Depends how damaged it is.
It can also come from some medication which is easier, just stop taking it.
The damage that hyperglycemia does to the the vagus nerve is exerted over many years, usually decades. It only makes sense when restoring normal blood sugar levels, it will take a fairly long time to heal.
I was diagnosed with “mild, yet significant” gastroparesis almost 10 years ago. My symptoms have gotten no worse and in many ways are better. I have other digestive challenges like GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) and SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) that complicate analysis.
When I received the gastroparesis diagnosis in 2012, I changed my style of eating to low carb, high fat. That way of eating made so many other things better; I consider it the most significant thing that I have done for my health in my 38 years of living with diabetes.
I believe that Dr. Bernstein commented that he reversed his gastroparesis but that it took a long time – not sure whether he meant months or years. Just remember that normalizing your blood glucose metabolism is one of the best things you can do for your health. You can be confident that normal blood sugars will do you no harm. You do need to guard against severe hypoglycemia and limiting glucose variability goes a long way to accomplishing that.
I visited my gastroenterologist yesterday to follow up on a severe colitis attack I had back in March. I told him I currently need to deficate three times in the morning between 7 and 11 in the morning with loosely formed stools.
He expressed concern that I was experiencing delayed bowl formation and wants me to have a stomach X-ray to check for some form of blockage. I was wondering if I was instead suffering with gastroparesis. I have been a diabetic for over 25 years
