So I just saw a commercial about a product called glucerna ( http://glucerna.com/ ) that is supposed to be better for diabetics, and its supposed to help keep a stable blood sugar.
Has anyone tried this stuff before???
Does it work???
I’m interested because I read once before someone having trouble eating cold cereal due to higher readings…
I can’t eat it becuase I am allergic to soy, some of my firends swear by it–others it doesn’t help at all–sure it is part ofthat YMMV–as long as your not allergic to anything in it worth a try in my estimation.
I have to add a little bit of regular milk in it because it takes a wee bit weird. I only had it for a week and it didn’t help me that much. My numbers were still high. I also tried the boost ones too.
Afraid this is all marketing & hype. The cereal has 28 grams of carbs for 3/4 cup, without milk.
Here are the ingredients:
WHEAT BRAN, WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR, RAISINS, SUCROMALT, FRUCTOSE, CORN BRAN, BARLEY MALT, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, SALT (SODIUM CHLORIDE), NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, CORN OIL, AND NATURAL VITAMIN E (TO PRESERVE FRESHNESS),
Nothing here that’s good for diabetics. You might as easily eat just wheat bran (bleech).
I posted a yummy granola subsitute in the food forum. Healthy, high fiber & very low carb. It uses golden flaxseed & chopped pecans, pumpkin seeds, almonds, unsweetened coconut flakes. Roasted together with coconut oil. I eat it with unsweetened almond milk & it’s great. You can also add peanut butter & make bars or balls for a snack.
I have used both the bars and lquid ; use it , when in marathon training and when I do the big 1/2 …just a quarter of a bar every 20 minutes …it maybe a bit gassy producing for some …I carry it with me , when away from home ( plane rides ) just in case no " proper " food availble …it has served me WELL
Here you go. Hope you like it! Much better than packaged stuff & far healthier. Lots of good Omega 3s.
1 cup 9.5 carbs
3/4 cup 7.1 carbs
1/2 cup 4.7 carbs
(unsweetened almond milk only 2 grams for 1 cup/8 oz)
Flax Seed And Nut Granola
1 cup golden flax seeds
1 cup sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds
1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup chopped almonds (I use slivered almonds)
3 ounces butter – melted (I use coconut oil–3 ounces)
3 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons vanilla extract—you can use more, or maple extract
3 packets of Splenda ( I used stevia–just a little)
In a large roasting pan mix everything together. Toast in 325 degees oven for a half hour, stirring every 10 minutes. When cooled, store in glass jar.
not too sure, but a place we can find them and print them out!
There’s nothing like a change in what you eat every day. Being diabetic since I was a young child I tend to lean to the same things every day, partly because I know how to “count” them.
I’ll ask Manny if there’s a way to do list recipes to easily print them without the discussion part. What I do is cut/paste into an email & then print.
Forgot to mention with granola recipe to keep an eye on it because it can burn easily & some ovens get hotter than others.
Know what you mean. I get in a rut because it’s easy, know the carbs, know the portions. I eat pretty much the same few things for lunch.
Glucerna is expensive so I have not tried it yet. But I found a coupon for $10 off two boxes (normally a box costs about $5+) so I"m going to try it soon.
If you are interested here’s the link. http://diabetescontrolforlife.com/index.aspx
You’ll need to 1. get a “free email account” to use for junk mail. 2. sign up at the site, make a “meal plan” and finally go to your profile page at the site. 3. on the right is a link for the internet printable coupon… you may have to install the printing software…(easy download) and this is a brinks so you can print the first one, then hit back 2-3 times and print again. $20 is a lot of savings. Enjoy.
Excellent alternative, Gerri. Not only is your recipe low in carbs, it appears to have a low glycemic index as well as having plenty of essential nutrients. I would just add that due to the fat content, consumers should be getting adequate daily exercise to help burn the fat off so that it doesn’t accumulate. Green tea can help in this endeavor.
Thanks, Craig. You’re right, it’s pretty high fat, even if it is good fat. The butter or coconut oil could be reduced some. I’m addicted to this stuff.
I love green tea, but found that it raises my BG. Must be the caffeine. Seen here where others say green tea lowers BG.
I view an item as Glucerna something as in eating in big time MODERATION …I use it when I am away from my regular ’ mode of operation " as on a plane if nothing more substantional available , training for my 1/2
Marathon and eventually doing the half M… I probably buy 6 bars a year and at the most 2 cans yearly …as I said before…it has served me well .And I agree with you Mr. P …nothing beats good old natural food …
