Hair removal...with diabetes

Hi, I’m newly diagnosed and am just wondering if waxing or epillating is okay with diabetes?..All the wax strip boxes seem to say ‘not suitable for diabetics’…and my epilator pamphlet says to consult a physician if you’re diabetic before use…

Hi Kitty,
I tried waxing a few years back and had a bad experience with it. It had nothing to do with diabetes, it was the pain!! It was horrible! I made sure they did not wax the area on the top of my thighs as that’s where I was doing my shots at the time. If they had, I wouldn’t have been able to use that area. The waxing left red marks on me that took about a week to heal. Your diabetes may make recovery time a little tougher. If you are going to have it done, make sure that it is a reputable place that uses clean/fresh wax each time, no “double-dipping.” Maybe ask a few friends or go online to check some places out. Also start with a small area on your body to see how you react to it. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi Jackie,

thanx for the reply…I have gotten waxed hundreds of timed before and I dont mind the pain but I dont know about my injection sites…I will try to figure that out…and also what worries me is all the wax boxes saying its not suitable for diabetics :frowning:

Hi Kitty! My thought has always been that it is a disclaimer due to possible circulation/infection issues. That you may not feel if there is a sore or you are not healing correctly. I agree with Jackie, test a spot to be safe, but I think since you wax frequently, your skin is used to it, you are newly diagnosed (with presumably no circulatory/healing issues) and as long as you monitor the waxing sites for any signs of infection, you should be just fine. All the best!

Thanx

I think waxing is fine if your diabetes is well-controlled. Dr. Steve Edelman says (I am paraphrasing), “What are the complications associated with well controlled diabetes? Nothing.” If your blood sugars are in good range, you’ll heal just fine.
