Happy Labour Day Weekend Everyone!

How do you all plan to spend these last days of summer holidays?

I ran 20 miles this AM, am going to eat for two days. I have to work on Monday though.

Happy Labor Day to you too Peetie! Today & tomorrow, I am working on cleaning - I didn’t get anything done this week. I am almost done with the kitchen, just need to mop up the floor. My sister is having a cookout at her house and I am going to take a salad and cantaloupe. I will have to chop up stuff for the salad (I guess I should have done that before cleaning the kitchen!).

Thanks for asking, Joanne. I plan to be totally relaxed, eating well and enjoying the sun. However, if I could, I would thank my late father for laboring (back-breaking work) so hard for our family while burdened with too many autoimmune diseases. I would also thank my late mother for laboring so hard for our family as a schoolteacher as well as caring for all of us, including those of us with these darn diseases. Have a good Holiday, Everybody.

20 miles! You deserve to eat AR. Too bad about Monday :(. Have a great 2 days!

Have a great time at the cookout Kelly. We are going to an annual BBQ tonight. Lots of folk…all ages…great party. We’re just taking the ice. I always wimp out like that. Cheers!

Sounds like a great day Judith… well… I’m not so sure about all the hauling. Have a great weekend! Joanne

Hi Trudy,
Good to hear that you are having a relaxing weekend. Hmm… we are entering the thankful time of the year (our Thanksgiving is just over a month away). Sounds like you had amazing parents.
I’m going to a late night party tonight. Think I’ll skip the wine and go for the jello shooters. A friend is bringing chocolate pudding shooters with Creme de Menthe. Cheers!

Hi Judith. Those “firsts” are so great – my grandmother was the first woman school teacher in the Territory of Texas, or so I’ve been told. I wish I had the ambition to write down all the family stuff I’ve heard – and some that I’ve lived. Some! I know that it’s unusual, but I think of my parents more on Labor Day (those early days were so, so hard) than any other holiday. Well, except maybe Christmas. Have a good holiday, and Cheers!

Happy Labour Day Weekend, everybody! It’s HOTHOTHOT here too (tomorrow’s cool front can’t come through fast enough) so we’re having a crab salad with wasabi dressing tonight. No cooking, except for the rice that will be a part of it. I got the recipe from Clean Eating - I love their magazine and website.

I’m in Cincinnati, and we also have the big End of Summer weekend coming up - a huge fireworks festival over the river downtown on Sunday night. We’ve staked out places in the crowd in the past but this year we’ll watch the TV coverage.

Have a great weekend Bron! The fireworks over the river must look amazing! Cheers! Joanne

My labor day weekend will be spent negotiating the meeting between my 17 year old very spoiled cat, Lula and our (hopefully) new addition, Clementine. Lula has always been pretty unwelcoming to other cats (well and dogs and humans and…the only other creatures she likes are deer!) But once we had a new cat after she appeared in the area and they spent 3 weeks getting to know each other outside. Lula and Clementine have had a bit less time than that in the yard next door but hopefully it will work with no bloodshed!!

My other “task” this weekend is to plan my trip on Wednesday to a rural area 2 hours away I’m considering moving to. I’m very excited and do hope the kitties have made their peace by then!

Many holidays have only been excuses for long weekends to me, and now that I’m retired they are less than even that. But I loved the work I got to do in my life, love the teaching I still do online, and am incredibly grateful that my last job resulted in my having premium-free insurance for my lifetime. I worked for a rural county for five years to get that and was diagnosed with diabetes only a month before retirement so it was a very happy coincidence.

We’re having our normal temperate weather here in the SF Bay area (I don’t think it made 70 in Berkeley today though it’s warmer inland)…Actually September and October are often our warmest months so it doesn’t really feel like “the end of summer”. I hope you all enjoy your Labor Day plans.and have good blood sugars despite them!

INSIDE!!! It’s to hot too trot around here today!!! Fall is my favorite time of year anyway. LOL!

Thanks Peetie! Ice is important too you know. If you tried to get that out of my freezer, you would be in trouble. I am hoping it doesn’t rain on Monday. If it does, we will eat inside but my sister has a big fenced in yard and Alex loves to be able to run.

Enjoy your BBQ!

Good luck with your cat-fest Zoe! That is always hard to introduce another critter because you never know how they will act. Your being gone for a day may actually help speed things up - no one can be jealous of you giving attention to the other and they will have a chance to be alone together.

Hi Zoe. Well it’s after noon here on Sunday and our 3 cats are still lazing around. We have one who likes dogs…but deer? You just have to explain that!

BTW You live in the one place that is still on my bucket list. Of course, the original plan was to drive down from Canada in an old VW Van when we finished school … lol. Somehow, life got in the way. We are nearing retirement now so… who knows?

Enjoy your weekend and your trip on Wednesday. Cheers!

Thanks, guys. The cat experiment was a dismal failure. The other cat was initially friendly to me, while Lula was outside, but then wanted nothing to do with either of us after Lula came in. They periodically growled at each other and then Lula and I hung out on the couch for awhile while the other cat decided the bed was her safe place. Whenever Lula approached she’d growl and wouldn’t let me pet her either. Finally when it was time to go to bed, there was no way that was going to happen and by the time I scooped up Lula they were both preparing for battle. I brought the cat back to the yard next door and left her some food and water. Oh well, good try.

The deer: When I lived in rural Northern California the deer roamed free in the town and spent a lot of time near my house as I lived on a creek. Lula would sit pretty close to them and watch them calmly, where other animals or people she either chased or ran from. I even noticed her following behind some babies one time until mama turned around! Considering how much bigger they were it was amazing! But I think she knew they wouldn’t hurt her.

Hi Doris: Fall is my favourite time too. Enjoy the AC! Joanne

Thanks Kelly. We did have a great time. They cooked roast beef and it was so good. Lots of good stuff there for me to eat…cheese, veggies and beef. Had a great time.
Hope your BBQ is great too.
Joanne

We are having a very different Labour Day w/e , while " home hosting " an 11 year old puppy recently diagnosed with diabetes. His guardians are out of country …I think I let my heart speak instead of my brains , when the day before the folks departure we were asked to become Aunt and Uncle for a while  …it is called " labour ", believe me . Already one visit to the Vet on Friday …Somogyi effect ??? Ear poking a challenge, however the Vet gave different lancets …one did work well , while at the Vet ; she also suggested to start poking again on Monday …poor guy !
I am ready for an infusion site change …present one : thumbs down !
Regardless I say : Cheers to all .
