SO a couple months back a posted some stuff in the forums regarding advice on more permanent or semi permanent forms of birth control. After consulting my doctor and my friends and the internet at large, I ended up choosing the Paraguard copper IUD, for a couple of reasons... no hormones to screw with my insulin absorption (this had been a problem with normal birth control), almost zero change of getting pregnant and can stay in place for 12 years (I don't want dia-babies) and it's not something I can forget to take.
SO, anyone out there have this little device in place? Between my pump and CGM and now this, I feel like 100% robot. I am specifically concerned with side effects from the foreign object/copper floating in my body... I've read horrible things about "foreign body resistance" which could screw up my blood sugars anyway and "copper toxicity" and tumors. Am I being a hypochondriac? Should I be?
When ever there is a change with your health you should be concerned. But if you've done the research and found out all you can and feel comfortable with this then you have nothing to worry about. Just as long as you feel comfortable putting it in your body then you should have no major worries. Best of luck! :)
I know it’s been a few years since you posted but I’m in the same boat. Did you end up getting the copper IUD?
I keep going back and forth about my decision. I had the Mirena - did not work for me. Between insulin resistance, lack of libido and staining all the time I finally had it removed.
My major issues with the copper are the fear of a never ending period and foreign object irritation/infections.
@Niz_Roxanne yes, I ended up getting the copper one in 2012 and i LOVE it.
I just have normal periods. Occasionally they’ll go on a little longer 8 days instead of 6 but really nothing terrible.
The first few months after getting it the periods were quite heavy then went to normal.
No hormone or insulin resistance effects.
Okay. I had a copper iud for hears and it was the most horrid experience. I had the biggest and longest periods for up to 10 days. Blood clots the size of softballs and had to change a tampon (super sized) every 20 minutes for the first three days. I took it out after five years and wish I would’ve done it years ago. So it sounds like previous poster had a better experience but it was truly horrible for me. You will have a longer and heavier period. Just giving out my two cents.
I had a paragard after my first was born (conceived on BCP’s), and 4 years later, surprise, I was pregnant with #2… I had SUPER heavy and clotty periods while I had it and after so long I was out of the habit of constantly checking for the strings each month. We suspect I expelled it and among all of the yuck just never noticed.
I had the paraguard and I loved it. I have 3 children ages, 29, 24 and 17. That is 5 and 7 years apart. It worked wonderfully. I had them removed when I decided to have another baby and unlike birth control pills there is no waiting within a month after removal I got pregnant. After having the baby I would have it put back in for another few years of spontaneous romance. Unlike other methods it does not put anything into your system and the copper is a low amount. No birth control is 100%. In the beginning you may have some cramping and heavy bleeding as your body gets use to it being present but beyond that you forget it is there. I hope that helps.
