High Blood Sugar

Yesterday I had surgery for ingrown toenails… Yes I chose to be put under anesthesia. Anywho, ever since then I cant get my blood sugar to go under 400… I have taken about 40 units total of my humalog between 6pm yesterday and now… Im taking vicodin 750, Naproxin, and flexiril ( the naproxin and flexiril are for an unknown reason for severe hip pain that Ive had since last year and cant figure out what is causing it… I cant sit down without having extremely severe pain that stretches from about the middle of both sides of my buttox, down to the back of my knees)… So, can anybody help me figure out what I can do to get my blood sugar back down to normal? or might my pain med.s be the reason for my high blood sugars?.. If I cant get it down by tomorrow Im going to call my endo… plus Ive took shots of my insulin just to be safe but I dont believe my pump set is broken in any way. Someone please help me. Thank you so much for reading and helping me out with my diabetes because I just got back on track with my diabetes.

Hi gotcher!
What I have learned is that any type of stress, and yes that includes pain, will cause your blood sugar to rise.
The pain that you have described, is all too familiar to me.
Not sure what your body type or fitness level is, but my experience, was that the pain was due to pinched nerves, which was caused by my back taking a beating due to my abdominal muscles not supporting my body properly.
All the working out in the world would not help this as my muscles got too streatched out from being pregant.
Long story short, it used to take me 10-15 mins. just to get out of bed in the morning due to the pain,I could not sit down during the day or i would be in too much pain to get back up again. i was taking so many pills and anti inflamitories that i was beginning to feel like i was poisoning myself. and… i was.
I was fortunate enough that i could afford the abdominal surgery needed to help support my body… and you know what?? it was the best thing i ever did. the results were immediate… as soon as i woke up surgery, my back pain was completely gone. I have not once since that day had to take any of those drugs again!!!

Thats great that u are free from ur pain… I just recently went to the doctor for mine… Im 5’6" and weigh 156… The pain started in my left hip and then went to my right one. I cant be in a car very long cause the pain is just too much to handle. For me its getting really depressing and I cry from it constantly because Im only 19 and I feel like Im falling apart. The only time my hips dont hurt is when I stad up or lay flat on my back so Im loosing sleep because of it too. also the pain started out of nowhere… I never fell or hit my hips… I just feel like Ill never have an answer to my pain, I see my doc. tomorrow for the results of my x-ray… I pray for an answer

Think about your tummy and your breasts… the weight from those alone will put extra stress on your hips and back. There is a nerve that runs from your lower back and over your hips called sciatic ( spelling?) That nerve is literally a pain in the arse!
I hate to say it but the only thing that will aleiviate that kind of pain permanently is to lose the weight even just 10 pounds will make a big difference, and really work on your abs, they support your core body more than you think! Drs will prescribe anti inflamitories and pain meds, which will eventually damage your kidneys and liver, being diabetic… you already have issues with that and dont need to add to it by poisoning yourself.
In the meantime time, before bed, put a cold pack on the area that is painful for about 10-15 mins. then lie on your back in bed with a very large pillow under your knees and lower legs. So it will be the sitting position but laying down. try sleeping like that for as long as you can. If you are a side sleeper, keep the pillow between your knees, as that takes some of the pressure off of your hips and lower back.
I really do know what your going through, and if you dont lose the xtra weight and work those abs, by the time your 30 you will need a walker or wheelchair. I am here for ya if you need to vent or ask questions!

Surgery alone can cause elevated blood sugars. It is a trauma to your body, an inflammation. Your body reacts with an elevated blood sugar. And once you get up to 400, insulin resistance may set in, so you have a double whammy. You may need to boost your correction by 50% or more.

I’ve had trouble with toenails as well. Did you get them removed? I’ve talked to my doctor about getting them removed.

On the hip thing, you may want to consider visiting a chiropractor, one who practices Active Release Techniques. You may find that all your pain and problems with your hip have to do with a misalignment, perhaps causing a compression.

Are you sure you don’t have an infection? Did the doctor give you an anitbiotic?

Tell us how you resolved this ! It’s now the 16th. How long was your BG up that high? What did the endo say to do?
