How do you find diabetics in your area?

Everywhere I go it’s really old people with Type 2… and I’m not old. :frowning: I just can’t relate to them. OR, parents of Type 1s…

med464…don’t you meet people with diabetes through your line of work ?

Thanks I would love to know more about it!!

yeah I do but usually ones who are not too intuned with caring for themselves that is when I hook them up with info on this site!! I made little business cards sort of with the web address

That is in Ohio not GA where I am BSC good thinking though thanks for the effort!!

Wow I would love to have lunch with another pumper who is not my 2 yr old she is good company but I want someone slightly older

Great Idea!!!

I too cannot find one in the Pittsburgh area for pumpers. All type 2 or educational. I’ve decided to start my own so far just me haha.

HAHAHAHAH, I am such a bonehead sometimes. At least this time I had the right country.

Ok, as a penalty, here are some alternate suggests.

Some of these contacts may be dated, but the WellStar looks promising.

ps. And I looked on the map this time, these are all in the US and probably in GA.

Try connecting with the JDRF to sponsor it, Dee. They did a good job on outreach to bring in the women for my type 1 women’s group.

Here on TuDiabetes, you can go to:
Members> Advanced Search
and enter city/town names near you, to try to find people “locally”.

Thanks manny I was thinking of just getting a GA get together going or something

Thanks BSC much better and great work!! I know well star well as I take patients there all the time on my ambulance. the people in that group are all type 2’s for some reason it is like the type 1’s are in hiding or something!! As for st joseph’s I know them all as that is my docs office who runs the group!! they are great but no type 1’s just type 2’s I would even settle for a type 2 pumper lol just someone who understands and is into keeping healthy. Now I didn’t know about northside so thanks too you I have a new group to persue!!

This discussion prompted me to find others in my area via Manny’s suggestion:

I now have a few local friends from TuDiabetes! At my next check-up, I’ll be checking with my endo to see if there are others like me as well (Type 2, young, relatively fit/healthy otherwise) that meet. If not, I might just start a meet-up group myself. Thanks for the ideas!

I’m kinda surprised the St. Josephs would be all type 2. It does after all say it is a insulin pumpers group. In either case, I wish you luck. Hope I at least partially redeemed myself by getting both the state and country correct this time.

Thank you all for the suggestions, gonna really try to start a group after discussing my readings with my parents and their response was that my meter must be broke and hearing my boyfriend (soon to be ex, haha) say he’s not my doctor this is long overdue. The support online is great but would love to have support locally!!! I’ll let you know the end result!!!

I have this same problem.

I am a Type 2 and I find it hard to find Type 2’s in my area. All I see are Type 1 groups meeting ups. It make me a little jealous to see all these Type 1 exclusive groups but no universal or Type 2 groups. Reminds me of the separate but equal court case. where’s the solidarity?

I tried to meet with one of the Type 1 groups and was told I couldn’t because I was Type 2. This group was closest to me. I pleaded with the guy and told him I was looking for support. Didn’t matter the purity of the group was more important than giving support to a Type 2. If you are familiar with Los Angeles then you know the city is extreme spread out. I there are groups in the OC and Ventura Counties but really none in the Valley. So finding a group close to you can really be challenging.

This is an argument that I’ve encountered before in reference to other groups that are geared to a specific population. I’m always bemused when people see this as an exclusion or even a bias. I have started a type 1 women’s support group. It’s only met a couple times and the main feeling at the group was how wonderful it was to be sharing with other people we didn’t have to explain to, who had a lot in common, who shared common experiences, feelings, obstacles and successes. If you had been sitting in that room, you might relate to some of what was being said, but most of it would not be relevant to you. If you were then able to sit in a room of type 2’s you would have that incredible feeling the first time people meet others who know exactly what they feel and what they deal with 24/7. It is not about exclusion, it’s about the great value of being with a group of people who share your experience. I would be very surprised if you were unable to find a type 2 group in the Valley. I would try doing a search on here, asking your endo, or checking in at a local diabetes treatment center. If nothing presents itself, do what I did. Start your own group!
