I was 750 at diagnosis (about 25 years ago). Since then, I’ve hit in the 500s/HI (who knows how high that was…) before—it’s been a while, and it was rare, but usually the result of a forgotten bolus (now also less likely since I’m back to pre-bolusing).
Every once in long while, probably once every 6mo to a year for like less than a half hour, I’ll be above 500. Above 400 maybe once a month or two. Above 300 once every few days. Above 200 at least once a day.
My son was at 450 when he was diagnosed. Since that time, has has hit 250-300 a few times, and 200 often (several times a week on a CGM when on vacation).
I was at 1500 when I was diagnosed
I was 9 years old, I was almost dead. I’m 28 now. The highest I’ve gone to is 500 range - due to a bad humalog vial
I have been over 400 multiple times when I would eat with a reading already in the 200’s. I am pre-bolusing now and waiting to start eating until I am closer to 100 and no longer have as many +300-400 readings.
Two times in the low 400’s. once because of stupidity and the other after a steroid shot I knew was wrong but I allowed anyway. Come to think of it both times were because of stupidity…
Today my allergist talked about prescribing oral steroids for me if my allergies this spring are as bad as they were last spring (uncontrollable for months despite four prescription medications). I’m not sure which would be worse, allergies so bad I have to take sick days, or the effects of oral steroids on my blood sugar… (He offered them to me once in the past and I turned them down and just suffered.) Here’s hoping that my allergies will somehow, miraculously not be so bad that I need to make that decision.
i was 1100 when i was diagnosed
I am taking the steroid prednisone for three days (first day was today) and my sugar will NOT go any lower than 350! I’ve Injected so much Humalog today it’s not even funny.
Any tips ?
Check out the thread on this site ‘Sugars super high while taking prescribed steroids…HELP!’ for some help.
I was 495 when diagnosed.
I was 895 when diagnosed
I was diagnosed 50 years ago, and they never told me what my bg was at the time. It was almost 30 years before home glucometers became available. I hit 29.5 one day last week, for no discernible reason. I think that’s the highest I’ve gone, as far as I remember. Oh, that’s about 540 in American.
Physical activity. Seriously. That’s the only thing I’ve found that does a tinkers damn when on steroids.
What I’m referring to specifically is its impact on insulin sensitivity. For me, seems to counteract the desensitizing effects of steroids/cortisol/adrenaline, etc.
722 when i was diagnosed on 1/5/16 and an A1c of 17.8
So helpful to hear from so many on the wide range of numbers. It helps me put into perspective my “highest” which was somewhere in the high 400 low 500 range. Since starting insulin in October 2016 I am doing much better with Tresiba and even better with mealtime insulin Novolog. Thanks to everyone for the wisdom and encouragement. Things are getting better. The highs came on gradually over months and I did not realize how sick I actually was feeling. Kind of a groggy, sluggish feeling and not wanting to get going in the the mornings, having trouble driving. I am now down in the 100-200 range and getting better. Thanks everyone!
What a wonderful improvement - you must feel so good about that but also just so much better !
Alex, we just passed your first diaversary
722: you must have been very sick:( How are you feeling now?
Was very sick… unresponsive when I got to the ER in DKA. Needless to say it was a scary time but here I am, learning more about this condition and how to better manage it. Thank you for asking. I feel for you parents of children with DM1… I can’t imagine how stressful it is! Sending you strength and positive thoughts
