Someone posted a while back about her endo not willing to give her the A1C result. So, out of interest, I asked my endo's nurse about A1C testing and how quickly I would get the results and whether it is an office procedure. The nurse told me they would do it in the office and I get my result immediately. That was nice to hear.
How often should I have that test? I forgot to ask her that. My last test was late May. Should I wait until the end of July? Or wait until the end of August? My A1c was 14.5 on March 22, and 10 on May 22. I am kind of hoping it will drop to 7 but who knows? My fasting BG's are between 70->140 and have been that for the last 2 months.
Most of us who are in "maintenance mode" get our A1cs tested every three months. Since you have been making dramatic changes, your doctor may want to check things more frequently and that is ok. The A1c reflects an average of your blood sugars over a period of three months and as such, it will really only have noticeable changes over the longer term, no point in checking it every two weeks.
Thanks. My next dr appt isn't until Nov. So, I think I will get an A1C in August and another one, right before my appt in Nov. That sounds like the timing is right. He decided that I was doing everything right and there was no need to see me until November ;-)
Yeah I get mine every 3 months...but I don't know endo may back off a little bit since my bg is under such good control now on a pump...this last one I think was more cause I just wanted to know. But usually most of us are at most every 3 months. That seems to be the norm.
I started seeing an endocrinologist in late March, and my glucose control has improved dramatically since then, from 13.0 to 6.8 as of yesterday. He conducts the A1C every three months and uses fructosamine testing at six-week intervals. (Fructosamine tests measure average glucose over a shorter period of time -- about 3 weeks vs. 3 months.) In addition, I record glucometer results 4x per day and submit them weekly.
Super! Your results are wonderful. I also started in March when my A1C=14.5 and a week ago, my A1C was 6.2. Aren't we doing great? I never heard of a fructosamine test and I will ask about it. He wants an A1C test every 3 months.
When I got out of hospital it was done a month later then it went to 3 months. you can buy home tests from walmart too and do it yourself if you want to do it more to check your progress in lowering you a1c.
That is fantastic! I have fructosamin too and glycomark.. I've forgotten what they are now but one always seems to show that I still spike to 190s. I rarely go there now from any of my measurements so I wonder how accurate it really is.
