I start Chemo in two weeks

On January 9th I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. I had 18 inches of my colon removed followed by ten days in the hospital. The cancer had spread to my lymph nodes which means that I have to do six months of chemotherapy. I have to tell you that having cancer makes diabetes seem like a walk in the park. My BGs have been good which has allowed me to heal up well from the surgery. I start chemo on Feb 12. I’m nervous. Today I attempted to bank sperm in case my goods are no good after the chemo. Unfortunately, I was told that my goods are already not so good because my body has been dealing with the cancer. It’s really a crazy time for me right now. So many questions my head is just spinning. Anyone else out there dealing with diabetes and cancer?

I really appreciate how candidly you share with us what you’re going through, Brian. I know from family members who have endured chemo that it can certainly put you through hell so I imagine it’s going to be no walk in the park. But I hope the cancer responds and releases its hold on your poor colon.

What a let-down for you at the bank! I hope they broke that news to you gently. Would they still store the goods for you despite their concerns?

I don’t really have any anecdotes to offer. Just love. Support. Friendship. And hope for you. We’re here for you, Brian. Your TuD family. However you need us to be.

Hi Brian-- I also appreciate the updates. I know that there are other people in our community who have/are dealing with cancer-- I will encourage them to contact you!

Surely chemo and the road ahead will not be easy. I hope that your blood sugars continue to cooperate, helping your body to handle everything. Please keep us posted!

Brian, I know many people with cancer colon, advanced, they are doing well years after therapy.About diabetes,it has to be in very well control,so there will not be problems with your defence mechanism and low white cells during chemo. High spirit & faith in God is so important Brian. All my prayers and love . A message from your story: persistant abdominal pain : ultrasound abdomen, diabetic or not.

Brian,

Good to hear from you & glad you’re back home. Been thinking of you & sending good thoughts your way.

Who wouldn’t be nervous starting chemo? Scary enough as it is without diabetes to deal with. Know someone who had colon cancer & Hepatitis C. He went through chemo with an obviously very impaired immune system & a lot older than you. Notice the word “had” colon cancer. Been years & he’s doing great.

You made through surgery with good BG–you’re strong & healing.

You’re in our hearts & we’re here for you.
