I have recently been spending time with family for the holidays. I know, know, know that when I'm low I can seem more passionate or irritable or loopy, and when I'm high I'm very irritable. But when I show any extreme emotion or get into a heated discussion, I am often met with a "are your blood sugars alright?", and I don't need that. Sometimes if I affirm that they are indeed normal, and I continue along, I get stopped and re-asked. It irks me a lot, because I don't like having people think that just because I feel passionately about something, it's only due to sugar levels being off. Do you know what I mean? It seems my family doesn't, but I can't expect them to know where I'm coming from. It's a very unique issue, I think.
Maybe poke in front of them and show result ?? ...oh , I don't know...however I think " they " mean well ... the other side of the coin ...something is really off and " they " don't do anything about it ...then what ? ...reasoning this out , while in a Low OR a High is difficult ...been there done that and will do in future with not nice consequenses :)
I definitely know how you feel. I can't argue with parents without getting "Go check your bloodsugar!". They seem to forget that you can have emotions that aren't sugar-related
Yes, I can relate! And it's beyond annoying. Makes me feel that my emotional range has been reduced to meter reading as the only cause. My husband gives me "that look" if I'm tired, or excited, followed by--you should test. Hey, I do have reactions that are not related to BG. I've told him that I don't find it caring. I find it patronizing.
I just came across your post here. Thank you so much, dear girl. I have done this very thing to my daughter too many times. Most of the time I am right, her sugars were off. But there were times, several at least, that I was wrong. To make it worse, I find my other children accusing Mary of being "off" because of her emotions. I feel so ashamed of myself. Thank you for teaching me. God Bless you!
Yup happens all the time! I am beginning to think they try to distract us from winning an argument! hahaha
Oh yeah, I hate how people sometime reduce us to a diabetic instead of a person. I mean, it's because they care I'm sure, but I try and be honest with my family about how those comments make me feel, and it usually helps, at least over time I think it improves as they become more aware of it.
You need a CGM (I use Dexcom). Then you can immediately pull it out, point to it and say "nope, normal, see, been normal for hours" and continue on winning the argument...
