My son just turned six and also just started on the paradigm veo pump. He has been using the 6mm quick set infusion sets, but recently I found information on the orbit 90 infusion set. It looks like it would be great and when I conacted them for more info, the person I spoke to recommended the orbit micro, which is a steal canual, claiming that steel ones are better than soft ones. To use either orbit infusion set with the minimed pump, different resevoirs with a luer lock are required, but they do make them for a minimed pump.
We have only used the quicksets so far, but these orbit ones look really good. And she said they are much smaller canulas and therefore less scarring.
I was wondering if anyone has tried either of the orbit sets, how they liked them and if it made a difference using these other resevoirs. I was also wondering from people who have tried both the soft and steel canulas what your preference is. thanks.
I have not used the orbit sets before, but I tried the QuickSets and had bent cannulas, now I use the Sure-T’s and love them. It is also a steel needle, which I like way better than the soft ones, they have several different lengths of needle, and different tubing lengths. I love that they have an “anchor” that attaches with a very strong adhesive and that’s where you disconnect the pump for swimming, bath, etc. No more cutting holes in IV3000!!!
If you like I could send you a few to try, I’ve got a stockpile of them, since I tend to stretch mine out a few days…let me know if you’d like to try a few, or if you like, Minimed would probably send you a few if you’d rather not give out your address to a stranger…
If you end up with the orbit’s, please come back and let us know how you like them!
I love them more than the QS’s. Lower profile and never a cannula clogging issue. Also, they are even easier to put it. You don’t need any inserter, just decide where you want it, and push it on. I never really feel it at all.
Best wishes and good luck.

Ha, tell me more about the Veo .!! Happy pumping !!
Tracy , I did try the Orbit Micro 90 steel infusion sets ; liked the system but …I was promised way back when ( early April ) , that they would fit my present MM reservoir …however found that I had to use the luer lock system …for me , at my age I was just not willing to have to " learn " how to . Has this been modified today ?? A pamphlet I have shows a MM pump without the luer lock ( I received the pamphlet October 2009 ) .
A thought : make certain , that if something goes not right with the delivery and you need to report , that MM covers, that you are using a different system ( Orbit Micro ) .
I use Sure-T’s as well as Tamara .
while i would be glad to take your offer of some sure Ts, the distribution company that is sending us the orbit micro samples is also sending us some sure T samples (they are not the orbit company so they distribute a variety of pump supplies). She said her son has been pumping for 9 (i think) years and his preference is the orbit micros, but she claims that the steel sets are better. Though it has only been a week and a half on insulin (and a week of saline trial before that), we have not really had any problems with the quicksets (except for one set not going in properly which we noticed after we had to change the site from high BG and the canula was all bent up). He has swam and bathed without the IV3000 and they have stuck quite well. I have noticed, however, that they do leave a large hole and when I did my one day saline trial I thought it stung a lot going in and for a while after (though I admit i am a big whimp:). I also noticed he really hesitated the last couple of site changes, so when I stumbled accross this I figured anything that might work better and be less painful is worth a try. I will let you know what he says about them after we get our samples in and have had a chance to try them:)
the veo is much like the 522, with most of the changes being around the CGM (which we are not currently trained on and likely won’t use much with the price of the sensors and size of the needles). The biggest thing if you are using the CGM it has a low glucose suspend so once you get so low it suspends the pump for 2 hours.
The luer lock thing has not been fixed; we are getting resevoir samples too. I don’t like the idea of needing to use different resevoirs too, but until i try the luer lock, i can’t say for sure. If they can make such a small steel cannula, why doesn’t minimed just make one too?
Another advantage of the Sure-T is that if the site that you first put the needle into hurts, you can just pull out the needle and move it to another spot nearby. The instructions say to only leave the needle in one spot for 48 hours, and that really is good advice. When I’ve tried to go longer, the needle gets blood in it.
I suppose the VEO system, as you describe is a step closer to the closed loop…thanks .
Quote: “If they can make such a small steel cannula, why doesn’t minimed just make one too?” …I am not clear what you mean by this …" .they " meaning MM ??..the Sure-T’'s needle gauge is 29 and for me in almost 100 percent cases painless to attach to me .
One can always as a customer suggest improvements ?
Trudy’s response hits it right on for me too.
My 4 year old was diagnosed 10/14/2009. He is 5-6 weeks on the pump now. I researched all of the infusion sets before he started pumping and we decided on Orbit Micros. I have tried Accu check Rapid D (the flattest profile) and I like the Cleos (90 degree teflon). We religiously change the infusion set every two days because if we let it go any longer we get bad numbers. We wanted to pick an infusion set that had the same needle thickness as his syringe (31).
We do his site changes during the midnight or 3am and he does not wake up. I can’t even believe it because he wakes up with a finger poke but not a site change. The difference is, I have to touch his hands to do a finger poke. With a site change, I just sneak the pump off his bottom without touching him, attach the orbit micro set to it, prime it and plop the site on the other side of his bottom. Sometimes he flinches, sometimes he doesn’t.
It is tricky if he is sleeping on his back but sometime during the night he will roll onto his side or stomach. I have found I have access to his backside without touching him either at midnight or 3am.
I had contacted Melany at insulinpumps.ca since we are in Canada and she had given me a variety of sample infusion sets. The Cleos are good for 3 days but he cries when we put it on him day or night. It is aweful to take off, it pulls his hair, even if we use REMOVE. The Rapid Ds are great but the needle is thicker than the Orbit Micro. The Rapid Ds are great if anyone needs a really flat profile, Orbit micros stick up quite high and my son ripped out several out of his bum, probably at least 5, before he got used to watching out for it. The Orbit Micros are a dream to take off with Remove. 2 min after adding remove, it comes off better than a band-aid. I never, never, ever had a problem in the bath. It never comes off with water. It’s claim is that it gets stronger with sweat so I can see why water doesn’t affect it.
My vote is for the Orbit Micros. My extrememly active 4 year old had to get used to not catching it on stuff but now it is second nature to him. He even goes on the trampoline with it and it doesn’t hurt. Imagine that!!!
The first couple of weeks on the pump we had to give up on the Orbit Micros because he said it felt funny and hurt him. He would pretend he couldn’t walk and he would cry. We used the Cleo for a few weeks and he would only cry when putting it in him but during the day it felt less funny to him. THEN, we snuck a Orbit micro on him one day during the night and he didn’t realize it the next morning and he continued his bouncing around and such. The moral is, don’t give up if a set doesn’t work, come back to it later and see if it works once the inital shock of the new pump wears off.
My friend has the paradigm. She switched to the Sure T. I have the Animas pump. She would switch to the Orbit Micros but she had heard that the paradigm is glichy with the Orbit Micros. Perhaps talk to Melany and see what she says about that.
I don’t have anything to add, as I’ve never tried any of these sets and love my Sure-T’s, but I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed and descriptive post. I’m a super OCD personality, and want to know everything about something before I spend $$ on it, and if it were me researching this subject your info. is just awesome!
Melany is who i talked to also. the thing with the paradigm and the orbit micros is that they don’t attach to the mm resevoirs, but there is a company that makes luer lock resevoirs to fit the paradigm. she is sending me the resevoirs and also some sure Ts.
why does the sure T appear to have 2 sticky things (we haven’t oepened the package right up, but just looking at the instructions and through the package window it appears that there are 2 parts that stick. is that correct?
so we got our samples and put the orbit micro on at today’s site change. I was surprised since the cannula is so small that he freaked out a bit that there was no inserter. He wanted to just use the other ones and not try these. I thought i had read somewhere in my research that someone had said they used their quickset inserter with either the micros or the sure Ts. with the quicksets we has also always connected everthing and inserted the infusion set connected to the pump. I followed the instructions on the micros which had us insert the set and set it up separately then connect and fill the cannula. I was thinking that maybe if we connected it all first it would be possible to use the quickset inserter. what do you think (having more experience with these infusion sets) and do you connect everthing first or connect after inserting?
okay, so tuesday after supper we tried the first orbit micro. yesterday after lunch the school called and said he was crying and saying that his leg (right thigh, were the infusion set was) was hurting. I went there and discovered that the set had partly come out. the sticky stuff was still attached but it had ripped around the inner plastic part. I took him home and put a new orbit micro set on. Today there was no school but my friend (who is a dialysis nurse) was watching him and after lunch she called me as his pump had a no delivery alarm. when i got there she said that he had been complaining throughout the morning that the site was stinging and really complained of this at his meal bolus. At lunch he was 3.6 and now slightly more than 1 hour later he was 22. apparently the meal bolus didn’t go through even though the alarm didn’t sound til about half our later. anyway we changed the site and put on a quickset and all has been fine since. Apparently his body does not like the steel sets. My friend said sometimes they have to use teflon needles/cannulas (whatever they are called for dialysis) for patients who react badly to the steel. So we are back to quicksets and there we will stay for now.
Though I must say that I really liked the micro, found it easy to insert and while it’s not a big deal, I really did like that it swiveled 360*.
How is your son doing with the Quick sets now? I am asking because whilst I’m not young like your son, I have discovered that my body doesn’t seem to like any infusion set except the Silhouettes. I admire you for being a good Mum and taking such good care of your young man
