I chose to go on insulin shots and discontinue the oral medication. The first Endo I spoke with about making the change from meds to shots was a bit surprised by my choice. I have better control with insulin, watching out for lows, during the night is a bit of a concern, otherwise insulin shots empowers.
My husband and I considered a pump, but when he passed away in 2010, I lost insurance coverage. So a pump is not an option for now, anyway.
A sliding scale failed to give me the ability to gain control. Then my husband located a Endo who promoted self-management, that was the answer to mastering my bg.
I purchase OTC insulin at Wal-Mart for $24.88 a vial.
I would love to hear others, personal experience of their transition to insulin
I'm right there with you. I have a low-carb diet and insulin. I use both short acting and Intermediate-acting insulin, it is working well for me to have good control of my bg.
My experience was much like Lloyd. I never had a good A1c on orals. I started insulin with Levemir but that wasn't enough and soon Novolog was added. I use a pump now and no orals at all. My last three A1c's have been in the fives.
Gary, A1C's in the 5's are amazing. I wish more T2 would consider insulin and pumps. People tend to be sacred of the thought of shots. When the truth is shots are painless and give advantage on controlling blood sugar levels.
