Anyone know of any really good apps for counting carbs?
Intuitive and quick is essential + different portion sizes and lots of natural non-packaged foods (everything packaged has the carbs listed anyway so I’d almost prefer those things be limited to ‘generic’ version anyway… this is the reason I don’t really like GoMeals… unintelligent search means way too many hoops to go through before I get to ‘banana’). I also have tried Carb Master but was not impressed.
I’m thinking I ought to fork out some money for a really good app for my own sake. I don’t really care about diabetes management, since my pump records all my BGs and Insulin that gets uploaded to Medtronic’s Carelink.
What do you guys use?
Just to clarify my problem with GoMeals… (unfortunate problems bc it’s pretty close to being just what I’d want):
Search -> ‘bananas’ ->select what type of search results I want to see (generic and grocery) -> select ‘generic’ from brand list -> select banana = 5 steps that could easily and should be 3.
Plus I really wish it would show plate’s total carbs right on the home screen… I don’t care about calories. So more extra clicks.
I do not think you will get an app much better than gomeals even if you are willing to pay money.
I have tons of carb counting apps and gomeals is about the best.
It's Free, it bug free, it a professional app that's nice to look at not some crappy clunky pos like some of the apps are.
Why don't you add your common eaten items to your favorites and this would cut down on your button pressing.
Most apps that have to search databases are going to have you press a few buttons but really how hard is that? I mean it beats have to browse through a paperback book using print so small you need a magnifier to see it.
I started using Lose It! a couple of weeks ago, MrsAcidRock has been using it a bit longer, and really like it a lot. You can scan in bar codes w/ your camera, which eliminates steps for processed stuff and other than that, I've found it easy to use and fun to log calories in and out, however questionable that may be. It is also handy for tracking daily %ages of carb/ protein/ fat which is is something I'm interested in.
CalorieKing just came out with an iPhone app that's free and really easy to use. It made me happy because previously I was using the mobile version of their site, but having an app is nicer.
CarbFinder is also a pretty good app, especially if you use carb factors when weighing foods.
I should note that neither of these apps actually store your data, they're just used for looking up nutritional information. CarbFinder will let you add up multiple items in a meal so you can see the totals, but you need to clear the plate for each meal. So if you want to actually store the information, they might not meet your needs.
The GoMeals actually uses the CalorieKing Database for it's database too.
I have the CalorieKing App, it's good for looking up foods however the GoMeals app is way better. For example: I am a coffee drinker and I make my own coffee at home and in the office. I did not like any of the standard entries they had for coffee with this or or coffe with that in the database so I created my own "My Home Made Foods". Within this "My Home Made Foods" named "Coffee" I have my Brewed Coffee entry calculated for 9 oz, I have my Whole Milk entry calculated for 1.5 oz. You can now add this Home Made Meal named Coffee to your intake or just view it for the carb count, etc. You can also make the "My Home Made Foods" item a Favorite also name "Coffee". The point is that this "Coffee" entry is for the way you have coffee with the carbs, calories, etc for the ingredients that is in your coffee not some standard Coffee, Small with Milk entry in the normal CalorieKing database. This make the GoMeal capable of being very accurate for carb counting for the way you make/take or portion foods and ingredients.
I was just originally looking for an app to count carbs as I was tried of have to brown certain websites and go through their layers of clicking to find the carbs for what I was consuming and I came across this app. Now I am actually seeing the whole picture each day of what I am consuming - when you see it in black & white, actually it's is beautiful color, you cannot dispute the facts of how many carbs/calories you are taking in. In other words, you can not lie to yourself.
If anyone needs any help with GoMeals or with the Omnipod or Animas pumps I am always available.
