Making the low go

No one likes the lows I know I don't so how do you treat one.

Well for me making the low go always depends on where I am when the low comes and if I remembered to pack what was needed. My favorite thing to use for a low is milk if I am in my dorm room, a Think Thin bar or a juice box if I am in class and if none of these are available then I wing it with what I can find in the vending machine. And yes I know the vending machine is not the best choice but when in need I will use what I can find. These will bring my blood sugar up without spiking it too high which is good because coming from a low to a too high is no fun either. In my car I have glucose tabs I really don't like them but will use them if I need they keep better in my car then the others do.

My all-time favorite is orange juice. But I only use it if I am low before I go on a run because it will spike my blood sugar too high that way I don't go low while I am running and I will not go too high either. It took me some time to figure out how long I would have to run to keep my blood sugar from getting too high but I think that is with all things we have to try to see how high it will spike and how much activity it will take to bring it down.

For those shaky, scary, panic inducing lows my favorite is chocolate frosting. It works fast for me. But at these time I must say I am gulity of allowing myself to in it a small bit. I am not proud of this but I feel that if we are going to talk about this lets be honest about it. Right? I know for me at that time the only thing on my mind is to get my blood sugar up and that is all.

So what is your favorite way to treat a low. Juice, glucose tabs, a secret candy stash? What's your favorite thing to indulge in when you are low? What do you find bring your blood sugar up fast withour spiking it too high?

Like you, depends on where I am or how fast I’m dropping.

At home or work, I keep juice handy – Welch’s 10-oz strawberry-kiwi (or whatever was on sale). In my pack is a bottle of juice, hard candy and glucose tabs (recent addition, the tabs). Juice if the drop is sudden; hard candy or tabs if I’m simply maintaining (maybe I’m in a long meeting but will free up within an hour or so).

I’m intrigued by your choice, as a Type 1, of chocolate frosting. I thought chocolate blocks insulin absorption? But I guess when the need is there, “whatever works” is the rule!

glucose tabs or gummi savers

E V Taniwaki I have heard that also. But it works for me and those lows don’t happen often.

Kathyann, gummi savers interesting.

Yup, my favorite for a low-low is chocolate frosting too!!! It works best when my husband is home with me, because he spoons it out and keeps me from over-indulging in it!!
