My feelings!

Bless you, but it is sort of apples and oranges. While on one level loss is loss, there are a lot of variables. As I have said elsewhere, misery isn’t a competition, after all…

I’m so sorry to hear about your son. I feel so guilty when I feel sorry for myself and then hear about patients who are worse off than I am. I have Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome. It often times pairs itself with SLE Lupus. So I have done a lot of reading on SLE. It is a terrible disease. We all have varying levels of diseases to deal with. I do however recognize how mentally grueling diabetes is when you have to worry about everything you put into your mouth. It is daunting. I have a lot of empathy for Type 1’s now that I have had to use insulin 2 times a day. I couldn’t even imagine having to inject 4-5 times a day. It must be a constant mental struggle. Hang in there Osob. Having a chronic illness is like losing a family member. You go through periods of mourning the loss of what you once had. In our case, it is the loss of being able to eat whatever we want whenever we want. It is as hard as dealing with any other major illness. You go through denial, anger, bargaining, and acceptance. It’s like being on a hamster wheel. Sometimes you go through the stages in order. Other times you go through the stages in reverse. Sometimes you get stuck in one stage. It takes time to overcome all of this. The best thing you can do is what you’re doing right now. You get on here and talk about it. You vent and receive support from those of us who understand what you’re going through. Hang in there. You are not in this alone.

Osob, you can still enjoy some good foods. You just have to make modifications to them. You should do some research on making sweets with almond flour. Almond flour is very low carb. I can make a chocolate cake in a coffee mug in the microwave with under 4 net grams of carbs. You make it with cocoa, Splenda, and almond flour. It will sate you and it will not raise your blood sugar. You can still eat what is called Paleo bread. they have one good company that sells the bread. It is ultra low carb but a bit pricey. You can switch to whole grain bread. You can still eat carbs, you just have to learn how to limit the portion sizes and mix them with a lot of fiber so that the sugars digest slowly and do not cause any rapid spikes in your BG levels. Sometimes I eat 1 meal a day with carbs and one meal with no carbs. You can really cut down on carbs that way. Also, once your insulin resistance is being treated, your hunger and cravings will go down. I do not have as many cravings now that my blood sugar levels are back under control. You are hungry all of the time because even though you are eating, your body can’t process the energy from the carbs. So, in essence, it’s like you’ve never eaten at all. It’s a very vicious cycle that will improve once your BG levels stabilize. Hang in there. It does get better.

@Blizzard2014- can u share the chocolate cake recipe?

3 MINUTE CHOCOLATE CAKE
1/4 cup almond flour, 1 ounce
1 tablespoon cocoa
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon granulated Splenda or equivalent liquid Splenda
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 tablespoon water or 1 tablespoon coconut oil. I always use coconut oil in mines.
1 egg

Mix the almond flour, cocoa, baking powder and granulated Splenda, if using, in a 2-cup glass measuring cup. Stir in the liquid Splenda, if using, butter, water and egg. Mix well with a spoon or fork. Scrape batter down evenly with a rubber spatula. Cover with plastic wrap * and vent by cutting a small slit in center. Microwave on HIGH 1 minute until set but still a little moist on top. I had to do mine for 1 minute 20 seconds. Cool slightly and serve warm topped with whipped cream or cool completely. Then enjoy.

Here is the nutritional content:

With granular Splenda:
Per Serving: 237 Calories; 22g Fat; 7g Protein; 7g Carbohydrate; 3g Dietary Fiber; 4g Net Carbs

Here is a link to the original recipe: 3 MINUTE CHOCOLATE CAKE - Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes

The cake is a little bit denser than it would be if you were to use flour, but it is still good. You can probably make some sort of low carb chocolate glaze to go on top of it as well. The only down side is that almond flour is expensive.

Thank you it’s just amazing having others who understand.
I usually write when I am finding it hard to deal with it.
I’ve been type 1 since the of 2 years old but find that everyday is a learning curve.
Being in tudiabetes has given me the confidence to share my true feelings without being judged.

Very well said, Osob. I so resent the doctors who told us children that a cure was imminent a half century ago. The ignorance about Type 1 is staggering: " You’re not overweight - how can you have diabetes?" It’s pointless to discuss it with most people, even nurses and doctors who are not endocrinologists.
We have every right to be angry.

Oh lord I also kept hearing about the cure and the saying as I grow up I will heal and diabetics can’t have children.
A lot of ignorance out there!:smirk:

@Sue_R: I’m type I also. Went to ER for unrelated crisis. My bs was 40. They treated me like a type 2 - one amp of D-50 which raises bs 75-100.

Then they gave me a HUGE sandwich, 2 c of fresh fruit and yogurt.

I’d asked them to decrease D-50 to half an amp. No dice. So I went home and took quite a bit of insulin coz the amp of D-50 actually raised my bs to 190 -more than 75-100, even though I refused to eat.

It seems as though Type 1 is not covered in either medical school or
nursing school. These doctors and nurses could spend 2 minutes on Google
and know more.

@Sue_R: You’re absolutely right!

(I’m an RN so I can attest to that)!

We weren’t educated on type 1’s.

Osob, Thank you for putting most of my thoughts and feelings to paper. Reading this makes me want to write diabetic poetry…

Oh no I would have love to read it.
At the start I was to shy to let ppl know I wrote them only on tudiabetes I would share but outside it I wouldnt😳.
My confidence has grown and if it helps one person then I am happy.

Or hope you get better soon.:unamused: Oh lord!:woman_facepalming:t4:
