New baby is here!

Hi all - I’m excited to share that my baby was born on Tuesday at 5:22am! He was 19.5 inches long and 6 pounds 15 ounces!

I ended up being induced about a week early - my insulin needs declined significantly, and my doctors took that as a warning sign that the placenta was aging early. I have to say, it was extremely difficult - the doctor on call seemed to think that I needed every single possible intervention from the get go (all sorts of internal monitoring, etc). They checked my blood sugar every hour, and I was on an insulin/glucose drip (it seems like they were mostly worried about my bg dropping too low – however, it was very tightly kept between 100 - 120 the entire time). The doctor also referred to me as “an extremely high risk situation” which was disheartening and discouraging (although I know I am high risk, it seemed really over the top! I really felt like I misunderstood what birth would be like - it seems like the risk is that blood sugar will drop too low, which is bad for everyone, but they way it was handled made it feel like so much more was actually at risk. It was very confusing). There ended up being more complications. We found out after the birth that baby’s cord was wrapped around his neck twice, causing lots of heart rate decelerations during labor.

They checked baby’s bg for a while after birth, and everything was totally fine. Breastfeeding has been challenging and they worried about his bg dropping too low at first, so we ended up supplementing with donor breast milk. He’s maintained good levels and so they stopped checking.

Now that I’m not pregnant any more, it’s been really fascinating to watch the changes in my bg - my endo stopped insulin until we figure out what’s going on, and without it my fasting was 110 this morning (OMG this feels like a miracle to me, considering how much insulin I needed at night during pregnancy). It feels weird that I don’t have the same control yet - some of my two hour checks have been a little high, but nothing terrible.

Although the birth was very difficult and my doctor was terrible - I am really proud of myself! I was meticulous about taking care of myself during pregnancy, and I successfully gave birth to a healthy little boy. I’m curious and excited to see how my body adjusts to life postpartum!

Yaaaaaaay!!! :baby:

I kept checking twice a day for some news from you for the past week; I am so very happy for you! Isn’t having a baby a miraculous event?!?!?

And what have you decided to name your little guy? If he looks anything like you, I’m sure he’s a real cutie!

Congratulations. Despite the doctor’s less than supportive behavior, it appears things turned out well. You and the baby are healthy. Good luck with your new role!

Thank you for sharing! Very glad to hear that all was well in the end and well done for you!

Congratulations!! Nothing so sweet as a new baby!

So glad to hear of your success. Now the fun starts.

Congratulations!

Happiness and health to all.

Congratulations! Glad to hear that both you and the baby got through well, so far! Enjoy your new son and enjoy the moment (and whatever time you spend in the hospital stay).

As @Roger212 said - now the fun (and most of the real work!) begins. I hope we continue to hear good news from you and your family!

So very happy for you! Enjoy every moment with your son! Being a parent is one of the greatest things out there! I wouldn’t trade it for anything! I am so glad it all worked out. I know it didn’t go as you had hoped but my thought is better safe when dealing with your precious little son. Enjoy your bonding time and relax a little while in he hospital because in another day you will be on your own without anyone to help. Take advantage of any help the nurses can give you. So happy for you. I’m sitting here with a huge smile on my face. Congratulations!

So happy for you. Congratulations to your new family. Nancy
