New infusion set targets 'silent occlusions'

The last I read about this was in a May 18, 2015 diaTribe piece.

The infusion set is expected to launch in the US in late 2015 or sometime in 2016.

The same article did state it was already approved in Canada and expected European approval soon. It would be nice if companies in this situation would provide some updates. Sometimes their competitive tactics come at the cost of keeping their prospective customers in the dark. I’m interested in the technology, too.

Really? I’ll have to check this out…

Unfortunately, Jen, approved does not necessarily mean produced. I think if it was available anywhere in the world, we would have heard about it.

Hmm, I’ve never heard of Canada approving a product before it’s been produced. Usually we get stuff years later than you do. I’ll ask my endocrinologist about it when I see him, since he tends to know about these things before they come on the market.

If you go to the BD web site, www.bd.com, & look around you can find the original release notice under News & Events. There is also a list of contact names. It is being produced in collaboration with Medtronics so maybe they have more info. It is supposed to have both a Luer & Medtronics connection capability. Like all of you I’m looking forward to trying it.

Yes I have done that thanks. I even emailed BD but I never got a single response from them. If they can give us a more concrete date then we all can plan our supplies accordingly. I usually stock about 3-6 months of supplies. So, I’m wondering when I should start holding off on ordering new infusion sets.

I suspect there is a hold up somewhere. Maybe they are having manufacturing problems. As you say it is frustrating. There was such a hoo-ha when they announced them months ago. Now silence. I’m sure a lot of people thought, great this sounds like just what I need, I know I did.

All they told me was I was on the mailing list and that was that. My Tslim rep wasnt sure if it would only fit Medtronic pumps, but I am pretty sure they said it would be made for all pumps. I sure do need it! :frowning:

It looks to me as though all the truly difficult work has already been accomplished. They have decided on a marketing phrase for it, BD FlowSmart™ Technology. All the rest is just polishing the details, no? :smirk:

Here’s a link to the BD FlowSmart cannual technology page. The page also contains links to other info, a video showing you why a cannula with two holes rather than just one is just so gobsmacking amazingly clever, and the press release announcing Medtronic & BD’s agreement to collaborate on producing/selling the new, improved infusion sets.

Now if they would just tell us if they’re going to replace their existing cannulas with the improved version or instead require us to buy a product with a different name which they can charge more for. I wonder which way they’ll go?

Hi Jen, did you notice if that happen after an insulin set change ? I get silent occlusions few hours after a change, when I hit a capillary.

Nope. That happened about 18 hours after changing the site. It seems that when my body reacts to a site, the reaction either cuts off insulin delivery or stops insulin from absorbing properly.
