That is ridicujous. How hard is it to figure out the carbs? They shoud have all info all ready when the whole launch of the product comes out. I think they are just protecting their butts.
Well, I won’t step foot in a MIckey D’s, even to go to the bathroom, but what do they have that is diabetic?
You mean the new “Light” Frap base is milk based? So maybe after all a Soy Frap can’t be Light? I asked the order dude if I could get a “Light” one with soy and he said yes. They blend the soy ones in a pink tinted pitcher so you know it is not used for any dairy. Now I am wondering if what I got wasn’t the actually Light Frap - even though that is what I ordered. Grrr…I will have to ask my vegan friends about this.
That would suck - why can’t they just make the base without milk and than add accordingly? Stupid Starbucks. The site is misleading than. I guess no Frap for me - ever.
im not sure how the occasional frappuccino = near death from a low?
for those of us who take insulin every time we eat we take insulin and every time run the risk of not taking the right amount, either too little or too much. the only exception is the few things we eat regularly and do not make changes to so we are very used to the exact amount of insulin and how it effects our bodies.
I still have to guess the carbs and bolus for a nonfat latte… so in your logic that could equal a near death from a low too. as does every time i bolus for high blood sugar or food/occasional frappuccino.
I have only fragmentary information and much from secondary sources. What really gets mu gourd is this place basically only sells a small set of coffee products. That is all they do. When I walk in and ask about what they are selling, what is in it and how many carbs, they mostly don’t know. This is a large company. It is frustrating.
Thank you so much fo this Cathy. This is a real problem for diabetics. Even if the new Frappuccinos are wonderfully low carb, diabetics can’t walk into a Starbucks and “know” what they are getting. This affects diabetics who are on insulin as well as the broader diabetic community. You can’t just walk in and order a drink that usually has like 90g of carbs and “bet” that it is 90g or 20g. It just does not work that way.
In my case, not having access to insulin, I will go high unless the drink is under 20g and even then, I’ll probably only be safe having a tall and dumping half of it.
II would urge all of you to tell starbucks that this is a problem. You can use your starbucks id (username) to post on mystarbucksidea.force.com.
thanks bsc, I dont have a Starbucks user name but I will now!
I was pretty shocked yesterday - I am wondering how many carbs were really in my Frap. Yeah, the Fraps aren’t safe yet. Luckily my 168 went done to 76 in the next three hours and I didn’t exercise or anything but I would prefer not to repeat it.
Funny thing about this whole Frap business is that I never saw so many kids in Starbucks as I did yesterday - normally it is all adult or college kid coffee addicts reading or working on their laptops but yesterday there were families with little kids and they were there to get their little kids Fraps. (now that they have those ones without coffee in it). Just what kids need …more sugar. Which is why I wasn’t surprised how much my Frap tasted like a chocolate milkshake or an ice cream bar - more thana coffee drink. They are trying to get families with small kids in there. God knows, all the teenagers are already addicted. I didn’t start drinking coffee until I was out of high school but than there wasn’t any Starbucks around than - maybe if there was I might of.
I just remembered that one of my vegan friends had posted an article on Facebook about the vegan and new base Fraps so thinking about this whole base deal I went back and reread. And alas, the "Light"Base is NOT vegan. Grrr…
No wonder I got all phelmy when I drank the dang thing yesterday. Unfair, so not only can a NOT have a Frap (becaue of the carbs) but I can’t even have the new Light ones (because they are not vegan AND because of the carbs of the soy milk) OR the new vegan creme ones (because of the carbs). This sucks. I have to get to complaining.
Well, I guess unless my D goes away by some miracle - no Fraps for me. Maybe not such a big deal any how because they changed them - they use more sugary stuff than coffee now anyhow. It is almost too sweet!
I guess I will have to make my own. Strong brew Coffee, stevia, ice and unsweented hemp or almond milk. Yum! I think it would work!
Okay so I work for Starbucks. I have not seen anywhere listed that the “light” version of the frappacinos is made with Stevia. I can double check this tomorrow for sure, but I’m pretty sure it isn’t. As far as any other flavor of frappacino besides SF caramel, SF Vanilla, SF hazelnut, and SF cinnamon dolce, all the other ones are going to have sugar in the syrup. Especially, the mocha. The Soy milk used is not low in sugar either. If you want to get it as low in sugar as possible, try this: Non-fat milk- 12g per cup and I’m pretty sure that it’s a cup used in the Venti size, then have them skip the classic syrup or use one of the SF varieties, my favorite is the vanilla- doesn’t taste like sugar substitute, and use the “light” base, and have them only use half as much and substitute more coffee base. I think in the tall size it’s only going to be around 12-15g of carbs. At least, that’s what i bolus to cover and my CGMS doesn’t show that it was too far off. The reason that the nutrition facts on this haven’t come out is because it’s going to be a “personalized” thing. It’s hard to get everything figured out when there are so many different options available. I hope this helps!
Thanks for the inside info. I got the info from other sources, but found references from starbucks “My Starbucks Blog” (http://blogs.starbucks.com/blogs/customer/archive/2010/05/04/howeve…). The comments from Jennifer who purports to represent Starbucks on the “Frappuccino® blended beverages team” suggest that the light base in the US is now made with Stevia. If you read through the latest comments, there is apparently a great deal of confusion about the changes to the “light base.”
How exactly do you order a SF one (means Sugar Free)? I didn’t see any options for it on the menu board. If we just ask for Sugar Free, can we be sure they will use the right syrup?
Yeah, If you can find out what is in the Light base that would be great. For me, I probably can’t have it anyhow because of the dairy. But I did have a Soy Latte Tall and my BG didn’t spike much at all - compared to the Frap where it went up almost 100. Maybe because there is sugar in the mocha or the light base than.
What exactly is the Light base supposed to be for anyhow? Less carbs? Or less calories? I am thinking it is probably calories.
It is less calories. The soy that we use is a Vanilla Soy so it’s been sweetened. I think the issue you had with the frappucino Kimberly was because of the mocha syrup and the soy, in addition to the light base.
You can’t exactly order a SF frappacino, but you can try this- get a tall coffee frappucino or SF vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, or cinnamon dolce syrup and have them sub out half of the Light base for coffee base, you can have this with or without caffeine. I know with regular non-fat milk, it rings in around 15 carbs (that’s what I bolused for and I watched my CGMS to make sure). As soon as I know more i will let you guys know!
Okay so the new nutrition facts finally came out and they should be available at your local Starbucks. And just to clear up some confusion, the Lite frappucino base is made with stevia, but it’s not carb free. The exact carb count is available in the new nutrition facts pamphlet. Enjoy!
So it sounds like the Lite one might be suitable for diabetics but maybe if you get a mocha or a syrup flavored one you need to be careful to ask for the Sugar Free Syrups - or just just a plain lite Coffee one? Just wondering if all the Starbucks have the SF syrups though.
I have been sticking with the Tall Soy Lattes lately since the Lite Fraps aren’t vegan. I am looking into some recipes on how to make my own - can’t be that hard and cheaper too!
